Is anyone else a little surprised by the success of The Village ?

Maybe it hasn't grossed enough yet to be considered a success, but after all the disappointing accounts of the movie I've read, I'd figured word of mouth would have killed it. It had a huge 67% drop after the opening weekend, but as of Thursday it had 103+ mil gross. My guess is it hits 110 before falling off the charts.

I guess I have no idea how to interprete Hollywood.

My theory is that it wasn't a totally awful movie but not what most people, critics included, expected. I haven't seen it yet but curiosity will probably get me to it next week so maybe others have that curiosity too.

We saw AVP today and it wasn't too bad. I expected far worse after what I've heard so now I'm more optimistic about The Village.

Im not surprised at all and if not for the leaking of the ending and some what i think is bad /unwarranted word of mouth the movie would have made much more.
Considering the movie cost 60 million to make it will be very profitable when you add in overseas box office/dvd and vhs sales/pay per view/tv rights etc. and this cant be said often for disney this year.

I saw The Village and I really liked it! I love movies that hand you something unexpected. I guess I'm wondering why people thought the movie was so bad. If anyone knows specifically what people disliked about it, please pass it on.

Bob O, I see you are from the Dairy State (as am I. . . same area of the state, too.) I also noticed your message under your name. . . are you my husband??? :p hahahaha

I'm one of those who didn't like The Village (I'm assuming we're talking of Shyamalan's newest flick). I thought a lot of the dialogue felt very stiff and I wasn't all that surprised by the ending. I saw it the day it opened and had heard nothing about how it would end other than that there would be the usual Shyamalan twist. I was seriously considering leaving after the first hour or so but stayed hoping the final wrap up would make it worth staying... it didn't.

Perhaps I was expecting too much but I don't really think I was since his movies have been hit and miss for me. I liked Sixth Sense, wasn't that thrilled with Unbreakable and thought Signs was good but could have been better without a lot of effort. It's possible this wasn't the right movie for me to watch that particular day. I was looking for something that made me think and this didn't.

Just my $.02.
