Wondering if bought resale and have the first set of restrictions. Would they keep the grandfather rules or should we buy a 25 add on for insurance.

If you are grandfathered before april 2016 then you are all good as you dont lose the membership extra and still have the blue membershipcard. I honestly dont think they would take that away. They could take away all benefits, but then it would be for all members not just you.

As always, it depends on the value of "it."

With the new pricing, "it" may be challenging to get financial benefit out of an add-on.

If I needed a few more points, I'd definitely consider it. It can be hard to find reasonably-priced small contracts via resale, especially if you need a particular use year.

We have no way to know if or when DVD might decide to up the amount of direct points required to qualify for Membership Extras. We tend to think that the past grandfathering is a pattern and/or a "guarantee" for the future, but since ME are not part of the contract, DVD can legally change those requirements at its sole discretion. Will they? Your guess is just as good as anyone else's.

IMO the only perk of value is the AP discount. If you go multiple times a year or for extended periods, it could be worth it.

Many of the dining discounts you can get from having a Disney Visa (free).

The moonlight magic events are nice but it’s luck of the draw whether one will be happening during your trip.

That really depends on how DVD wants to play its hand. It can easily create tiers of benefits where anyone with less than a certain number of direct purchased points are no longer eligible for certain ones.

Financially I couldn’t get the numbers to work out. Having said that you can go to things like moonlight magic and other DVc member events. If those are important to you then it may be worth it - no longer a financial decision at that point imo.

The first set? Done in 2011? If so, then no, I wouldn't worry nor buy any points direct.

Same here. I have done it for a number of different resorts and scenarios ever since I passed ROFR on my only DVC contract purchased after April 2016. While purchasing DVC (direct or resale) should never be strictly based on number crunching, DVCs purchased in resale (and to some that bought direct many years ago) have thus far been defying the logic of timeshares from a financial standpoint. Many people can (and have) turn(ed) a profit when selling. However, with current direct prices, it will take a very long time if ever to make the same claim (I supposed people were saying this 20 or so years ago!).

I needed a small contract for the points. I tried to get resale but direct after the $100 closing and current years' points was about $300 more. For that, I wasn't going to mess about with resale, particularly as I needed those points sharpish for a booking I've just made. So I have the blue card.
Would I have bought direct just to get the blue card? Probably not. As a UK buyer, I only go once every other year and for 10-14 days. A UK Ultimate 14 day ticket is still cheaper than a discounted annual pass and does me fine.
Will DVC suddenly say people with 25 direct add one not get perks? They could, as perks are marketing paid for by DVD, but I'd be amazed if they did. Imagine all the headlines - DVC took away my perks because I didn't buy enough points with them.
I think DVD for the time being have worked out well publicised perks, such as the lounge and Moonlight Magic, sell an awful lot of DVC.
It will be interesting to see what the world of perks brings in 2018.
Happy Christmas everyone.

Not saying it will happen, but if DVD decides to tighten the perks to "real" direct purchasers (ie: those that bought most/all of their points direct), it will be gradual. It will be in the form of announcing new perks for those with a certain number of qualifying points. Then, some of the old perks will gradually disappear. I supposed DVD won't mind those grandfathered in to still trade their points for cruises or other Disney resorts because they are such poor value propositions.

Unless you need the points I wouldn't. They won't give you additional options on the points you currently have. If you need the points, I'd evaluate on the cost for what you want/need without consideration for the retail restrictions since you don't lose anything of value having the first set of restrictions but not the second..
