is a salad the same as an appetizer?

dd is now an "adult" by disney standards and will be ordering off the adult menu... having reviewed some of the menus, i don't see many appetizers that she would care for... but she LOVES salad... could a salad (i.e. a caesar) be substituted for an appetizer? or will we have to pay for the salad separately and dh and i eat her appetizer (what a hardship! LOL!)?

I have done that before as long as the salad was a dinner or small portion and not an entree portion. Ask your server as it may be a judgement call or depend where you are eating.

We did it last week at a couple of table services and counter services! As long as it is not listed as an entree i.e. caesar salad with chicken. By the way, a side salad at the counter service at the Contemporary has enough lettuce crammed in there for two adults! They also have sides of fruit & pasta salad too.
