Is 50 minutes enough connection time

If you’re okay running if needed, you’ll probably be fine. I had a 50 minute layover in Baltimore several years ago which because of a slight delay me and another family on the flight had to run from our first flight to the next one. It was definitely memorable, people at gates along the way were cheering us on haha

Same airline - American. No international leg. These short connection times are all they have to offer for us with no non-stops available. If we miss our flight I would hope they’d try to get us on another flight since it was their scheduling that was the issue.
They will try to get you on another flight. They're not going to leave you stranded at the airport. BUT their next flight may be full (meaning waiting until the flight AFTER that one) or their next flight may not be until the next day. You can look at their schedule and pick out flights that give you more connecting time. Then call them, say their change (this was a change, right, you didn't book it originally) doesn't work and you want to be put on flight <1234> instead.

Airlines wouldn't book flights with connections which are often missed. People who are VERY RISK ADVERSE or who need extra time (mobility issues or need to have a meal) should book a longer connection. Call if you can't book online.

Sometimes an airline has a bunch of flights arriving from smaller airports, a number of flights from different airports, in the same window. Those flights may have their times padded to enhance on time performance. Those flights are designed to connect with flights. If an incoming flight is delayed, just landing or maybe in range, departing flights might be delayed.

Do you want the possibility of not making a connection and wasting a few extra hours in the airport or planning on wasting extra hours in the airport by booking a longer connection? I wouldn't do this if I was connecting with a flight that only runs once a day. Just make sure there are flight options later in the day.
