I went and watched my friends grandson today. he is going to be 5 in September. he still whines, has to have his "Blankie" and messes his pants big time. My friend carries him like a bay, rocks him like a baby and talks to him like a baby, this kid has become a brat. His father has tought him if you have to pee outdoors just find a corner and go. I was discusted today. I don't emeber my son being like this at that age, am I getting tod old for young kids? :D

It's not you !!

5yrs old is definitally WAY TOO old for that.
He is going to have a rough time in school!!!!

I agree....5 years old is too old for that kind of thing.

Here is an article on whining from Parents.com

http://www.parents.com/articles/ages_and_stages/3090.jsp

He is 4 yrs. old, so he is still developing his verbal skills; maybe he gets a quicker reaction if he whines.

As for the blankie, I don't see anything wrong with that unless he is attached to it all day. My kids loved their blankies, they didn't carry them around all day long, but always snuggled up with them for naps or nighttime. Blankets are very comforting to young children.

Does he go to preschool? Sounds like he hasn't had a lot of experience in a group setting, but I could be wrong.

Is this family from another country? It's not uncommon for children from other cultures to pee outside. My friend is a special ed teacher and has encountered this with some students from other countries/cultures.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that every child is different and there may be other reasons why this is happening.

RitaZ., him and his parents grandparents and all family were born in the USA. he caries the "Blankie wherever he goes. I just see him growing up like his mother when my friend had her. People couldn't stomach being around her and he is turning out like that. As far as peeing outside, his father and mother are 25 (her) and 31 (him, heavy pit smokers and big big drinkers. i just dont think they were ready to be parents 5 yrs ago. they got married when the little one was 4. just a screwed up family

Very sad because he will be the one that will suffer. He will be picked on and never "fit in" with the other kids.
Is there any way to tactfully talk to your friend?

I've tried but I don't think she gets it. I don't want to fight over it, it's her grandchild, not mine, not worth ruining a friendship over, I've known her for 30 yrs this yr. :D
