This thread isn't really about language, it's about power. [Please note the intentional use of a comma splice for emphasis between the two sentences.] Of course, language and power are inseparable, as phrases like "right to speak," "finding one's voice," "getting the last word," and "having a (final) say" suggest.

The thread shows how power struggles were enacted in a particular classroom--an example which perhaps reflects those in other settings--and in a parent's anonymous email. From my perspective, though, the dynamics that developed between posters is even more demonstrative of the relationship between power and language. Analyzing these posts reveal who has power, who wants it, and how people respond to its exertion.

I, for one, applaud how some posters have used humor to defuse the increasingly contentious tone of the thread.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, especially seeing as the Mods have not closed the thread. I think the humorously subversive posts are appropriate responses and certainly less troubling to me than other posts.

FYI: The rule about semicolon use isn't hard and fast. A comma splice, when used sparingly and for emphasis, is an appropriate option. This construction is often used to draw a reader's attention to parallels. In this case, the use of the comma splice emphasized the relationship between language and power. I indicated my awareness of breaking with convention in my parenthetical comment, with its use of the word intentional; you used a similiar tactic with your parenthetical "(yes, I meant 1000)." Perhaps you overlooked part of my post?

"What kind of a man are you?"
"I'm a man who respects a good coma."

Language rules are silly and Safirish. It is a medium to communicate, nothing more. Violations only occur when that purpose is jeopardized. To make a point otherwise says more about oneself than the speaker being corrected

I think you've already gone overboard by emailing over such a trivial matter.

Btw, the teacher was right, it is a word.

Ditto. You really emailed the teacher over this??? :confused3

Teachers make mistakes-- even in the top 50 schools. I taught AP and honors kids, and I could see them interrupting class to challenge me, (they loved to prove teachers wrong). I loved these kids, and I do remember having a mistake or two pointed out-- I enjoyed being challenged by my students-- proved they were paying attentiong. I don't think the kids did anything wrong by challenging the teacher. The teacher was a little goofy for fighting them on it, and not admitting the mistake--- kids don't respect that. But, a parent emailing the teacher over it-- that's a little over the top. :sad2:

Editing-- I only read the first page of this thread, and didn't realize (until I saw my post) that there were 17 pages and it's been sort of hijacked lol. I don't know if you're even discussing this any more.

I'll be headed off to Disney soon......anyone have a tip calculator I can borrow?
