Just My HONEST Opinion!!!! :thumbsup2

Thanks momrek. That's what I get for answering a post asking for my opinion WITH my opinion. Called a hypocrite. Honesty, what a concept!!

And to blend 2 topics:
"Hi. My name is George. I am short, fat, bald, unemployed, and I live with my parents."

It probably will be by anonymous e-mail, so we'll never know. ;)

This thread isn't really about language, it's about power. [Please note the intentional use of a comma splice for emphasis between the two sentences.] Of course, language and power are inseparable, as phrases like "right to speak," "finding one's voice," "getting the last word," and "having a (final) say" suggest.

The thread shows how power struggles were enacted in a particular classroom--an example which perhaps reflects those in other settings--and in a parent's anonymous email. From my perspective, though, the dynamics that developed between posters is even more demonstrative of the relationship between power and language. Analyzing these posts reveal who has power, who wants it, and how people respond to its exertion.

I, for one, applaud how some posters have used humor to defuse the increasingly contentious tone of the thread.

Actually, it does. Go to www.gov.sz and check out the Education Department.
As for Canada, I do not believe that there are citizens, born in Canada, educated in either the English speaking or French speaking provinces who reach adulthood and cannot speak either language.

Sorry I didn't type that correctly. What I was trying to say that, in Canada, there are many people who can only speak one of the official languages and can't understand a word of the other.

I was taught that if two parts of a sentence can stand on their own, they are separated by a semi-colon not a comma.

As to the last, I disagree 1000% (yes, I meant 1000). This thread is a perfect example of a hijack. Highjacking threads has been discussed to death and the general consensus was that it is a no-no.

I haven't been here for awhile, but I wanted to point out that it's after August 22nd, and we are all still here. Irregardless of the fear-mongers' predictions, we are all still here.

 And here we go again. The thread has changed course. Now you're trying to hijack it back to grammer again.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, especially seeing as the Mods have not closed the thread. I think the humorously subversive posts are appropriate responses and certainly less troubling to me than other posts.

FYI: The rule about semicolon use isn't hard and fast. A comma splice, when used sparingly and for emphasis, is an appropriate option. This construction is often used to draw a reader's attention to parallels. In this case, the use of the comma splice emphasized the relationship between language and power. I indicated my awareness of breaking with convention in my parenthetical comment, with its use of the word intentional; you used a similiar tactic with your parenthetical "(yes, I meant 1000)." Perhaps you overlooked part of my post?
