I am an avid ironer (if that's even a word LOL) I go through irons like crazy and I'm sick of it. I was just in the middle of ironing and poof...the thing starts smoking. I was waiting for it to literally burst in flames. I have always bought my irons at Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc, so I have never paid more than $30-$40. So I went online to QVC and noticed that the one that my MIL has was like $89 (on sale) but of the 5 reviews that it had, they all gave the iron only 1 star rating. But then there's a similar Rowenta one for $45 and had a 3 star rating. This is driving me nuts.

I still had a lot of ironing to do so I asked my MIL to borrow hers. She has a Rowenta from QVC and told me I NEED to order myself one. I've seen the demonstrations of them on QVC and have always been intriqued on how good they are. Well, after using hers, I really can't say that there was much of a difference between that one and the ones that I always use (Black/Decker, Sunbeam, etc) Except that hers was really heavy compared to what I've always used.

The problems that I've always had was water leaking, cord breaking and now smoking....

What is your favorite brand and how much was it? And what's the average life of an iron?

My 17 year old Rowenta just bit the dust so I replaced it with a new Rowenta. They just don't compare to the cheep ones at KMart, etc. If you are an avid ironer I will send you my iron and ironing from now on if you want but you should get a GOOD iron if you do a lot. I just got my new one from Kohl's for around $100-115 something like that.

I can't imagine ironing enough to wear out iron after iron LOL.....I couldn't tell you the last time I ironed anything.
Good luck with whatever one you find!

I'm on my second rowenta. What pushed me toward it was all of the cheapy's kept dying. I spoke with my bf's mother, seamstress, and that was what she used. I figured if it was good for her and held up to what she did, it would be good for me. This last one we've had is 10+ yrs. First one didn't hold up that long.

Check Walmart for them too. It was odd, about a week after replacing ours, we found it cheaper at WM.

All the reviews that I read on QVC said that their Rowenta died within a couple of years. I'm wondering now, hearing you say that you've had it for 17 yrs, 10yrs, etc.....maybe they're not making them like they used to?

I'm not sure how long my MIL has had hers but I don't feel like shelling out $100 for an iron, only for it to last a couple years.

I'll keep an eye out in Walmart. Never saw them there but it's not going to hurt to look.

I like Rowenta. I am on my second one. The first one may have lasted longer if it hadn't been dropped. I have heard that the Rowentas made in the USA are better. I don't know. I bought mine at Costco.

I'm on my second Rowenta, too.

My first one was a Rowenta Surfline. I got it for my wedding (1996) and I think it was around $60 at the time. It lasted until last summer, then it stopped heating consistently.

I bought this Rowenta from Kohl's (on sale and with a coupon!): http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/lan...e/irons/PRD~135718/Rowenta+Effective+Iron.jsp
I'm not an "avid ironer" but it seems to do everything I need and is working well so far.

I thought you were asking for a recommendation on Iron supplements! That's the only IRON I've ever heard of!:lmao:

My DH does any ironing that needs to be done around here!:thumbsup2

I have a Rowenta that I got from Target and I believe it was in the $60 range. It has a better weight and larger ironing surface than the cheaper brands.

The cheapest of the Rowenta irons are made in Mexico. They did that so they could compete with some the cheaper irons. They aren't as good. If you buy a Rowenta, look at the box. If you see "Made In Germany" you're good to go. Most likely, that iron will be about $80. If it says "Made in Mexico" you may as well go to Target.

Good to know. I'm heading out to Kohls in just a bit (I have a 15%coupon that's been burning a hole in my pocket, now I get to use it on something useful)

Thanks!!!

i would recommend a biler iron. you fill the boiler and sit the iron on top while it heats up. the iron still steams and they work really well. we use them at college. in case anyone doesn't now what a boiler is, they look like this

also, make sure you use filtered water to fill your iron, because lime build-up can ruin your iron.

Same here. Our first one lasted about 6 years. Our ironing board was in the basement. I don't know how many times it was dropped on the floor. I now keep the ironing board and iron in my closet and use as needed.

I did not know that about where it was mfr'ed. That would explain why it cost less at WM.

My mother goes to the goodwill shop and buys those old irons from the 50's. She swears they get hotter and are heavier, therefore work better. They might, but I'm not sure I want to test that theory. I keep thinking the wiring cannot be great, pretty sure every house built during that time had the wiring redone. ;)

So this is the one I ended up getting at Kohls. Normally $89.99 on sale for $59.99 and then I had a 15% off coupon. So I ended up paying like $54.

Is it Made In Mexico? I have the same one (except mine's the version with the regular cord, not the cord reel), but I don't have the box anymore. I'm just wondering where mine was made, based on a previous poster's comments about the Mexican-made models vs. the German-made models.

LOL I did check all of the boxes out (the model that I got and all the others) and none of them said Mexico OR Germany!!! They were all from China!!! Go figure!!!
