Irish Racism on the Dis

Your talking about St. Patrick right? He was captured by irish maurauders early in his life and was forced into slavery. He then returned to Ireland because he believed it was God's will to free the Irish culture from the savages who enslaved most of the population. By doing this, he had to enlighten the population about the word of God. Thats all we really know about him, there were only two written scriptures about St. Patrick, we dont even know when he died. Christians and Irish alike celebrate this day because of liberation, and they become "plastered" because it symbolizes freedom of choice, which many irishmen never had.

I thought you were giving the history of the winning side with a straight face...then I got to the last sentance, and surely you jest!
edit to add:
Sorry, I should not be dismissive and rude...I hope you were joking...'cause, honestly, I could go on about the introduction of the potato in Ireland and the simultaneous switch over to inbibing beer instead of meade and how the resulting introduction of alcoholism is analogous to the introduction of drugs to our inner cities, but I can't cite my sources at the moment, so I'll go change a diaper instead.

You missed my point. Paddy is an abbv. from Patrick, that is common Irish knowledge and I know people who are actually named Paddy. The English used Mick, paddy and taig as a slang word to irritate the Irish.

And you missed mine - I know a few people named "Paddy" as well. None of them are named Patrick, except for those that live in or emigrated from Ireland. I know very few people who, when asked "what is a nickname for Patrick?", would say "Paddy" - but I know plenty that, when asked "What does Paddy stand for?", would say "an Irishman"

and the English arent the only ones who use those terms: you can add the Italians, the Dutch, the French and the Germans to that list among others.

It seems as though people are doing this mainly out of ignorance, not hate (and isn't most bigotry and intolerance simply ignorance?)
I am so sorry that your views weren't recognized or given value--please continue to patiently EDUCATE people--that is the only way to overcome the racism! I think that you have already reached many on this board concerning the topic--so you are making a difference! So many people think that the only racism that exists is the ones that make national headlines, but there are as many others as there are peoples in this world. Thank you for your personal views and insight--I have been enlightened about this topic and will not "slur" again (I wasn't aware that "paddy" had such a history--perhaps we should all examine the roots of what we say). Can we all please hold hands and sing "It's a Small World" now?

I am a longtime member over on the VMK board - While I can understand the innocent use of a word, I do not understand why I should be bashed for pointing out that the term was HIGHLY offensive to me. I feel the moderators should have backed me up a little bit, but no, they did not. I got the "well even Hallmark uses it" line. Most of you will probably laugh, but the word was "paddy" - this term is highly offensive to me, it is a derogatory term for a person of Irish decent. So I ask you all, since this term is ok, would it be ok for me to use a derogatory term for a black person just because alot of rappers use it?

Sorry to come off like this but I am pretty steamed over this situation. I have endured ALOT of racism towards me due to my Irish Catholic decent in my life and I feel I should NOT have to put up with it here.

If it offended you that was a point that you made known, but why would you have any expectations that someone sould back you up on that?
It would be easy to say well that was not as bad as saying the "N" word, but i won't say that because, i am not sure what "paddy" means but it very well could be the equal to the N word in another culture. I have not heard of Irish Catholic racism before, but as they will tell you, if you are not happy here, no one is forcing you to stay. Anyway, best of luck.

Dear Moderator, this thread is heading straight for the loo.

I vote that it be closed.

I am truly sorry you were offended and no one could see your point of view. I for one feel that I have learned something today and I thank you, and many of the subsequent posters, for enlightening me (and all of us.)

Thank you all for taking the time to post your knowledge and history with us.

? were you looking for the spawn of hello kitty and Che Guevara or my DD (who goes by "Che")
I'm confused and having a semi-creepy-am-i-being-stalked moment ;)
then again, maybe it has nothing to do with me and I'm having a paranoid moment?
It's an inside joke. Don't worry. :thumbsup2

I most certainly thought that I would be backed up on it. If I were to use a derogatory term to describe a black person, Hispanic person, gay man, or any other "minority" I woiuld have been banned from the board, regardless of my intent. Wether you realize it or not, the Irish have been persecuted for centuries by everyone from the Romans, to the Gauls to the British right up to the indentured servitude days in New york City in the late 1800s, early 1900s. We were the last culture to be legally enslaved in the US and have faced racism for as long as any other minority. It still goes on today in the US and in the British Empire, except that it is not recognized as racism, even though it is as clear as any other form.

>>> St. Paddy's Day
Paddy is a boy, Patty is a girl.

Mick and Paddy are perfectly good real names. (Mick Jagger or Mickey Mantle anyone?) True, these are also derogatory nicknames but the reason is because a lot of Irish people are named Michael and Patrick, respectively. A lot of Chinese people are named Ching (as pronounced and spelled in English) and that fact alone has produced a derogatory nickname for that group.
