TEHRAN, Iran, Feb. 19 All 270 people aboard an Iranian airliner that crashed in southern Iran Wednesday were killed, state-run Tehran television reported. The plane was on a domestic route from Zahedan to Kerman, both in southern Iran. Most of the passengers were military, the television report stated.
ZAHEDAN IS on the Pakistan border, while Kerman is about 500 miles southeast of Tehran.
The television report said the plane, reportedly a Ukraine-built Antonov, lost contact with the control tower at 5:30 p.m. local time. The plane crashed near Shahdad, a town close to Kerman.
Just over a year ago, 119 people were killed in western Iran when a Soviet-era Tupolev 154 slammed into a mountainside.
And a Ukrainian Antonov plane carrying aviation experts crashed in Iran on Dec. 23, killing all 46 people on board. The experts were traveling to the Iranian city of Isfahan to test a new plane.
