I know I have to declare medicaitons and liquids under 3oz, but what about electronics? Can we leave our ipods, DS's and cells in our bags during the security check or do we have to show those to be scanned separately like laptops are?

I thought I read somewhere the someone said to put electonics in a ziploc and put them thru the security belt separately.:confused3

We put all the cellphones, cameras and Ipods in a bin while going thru security. One of us lags behind and stays with the bin just to keep an eye on it.

No need to pull your cell phones, ipods, cameras out of your carry on. They only need DVD players, laptops and video cameras in a separate bin.

If it doesn't need to be in a separate bin keep them hidden in your carry on. That way someone else won't walk off with them or be tempted to steal them.

The TSA initiated new rules for electronics earlier this month for "electronic devices larger than a cell phone."

The TSA website says:

Laptops, Full-size Video Game Consoles and Other Large Electronics

Effective August 4, 2007, laptop computers, full-size video game consoles (for example Playstation®, X-box®, or Nintendo®), full-size DVD players, and video cameras that use video cassettes must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Laptop computers and video cameras that use cassettes have long been subject to this policy.

What Needs to be Screened Separately
  • Laptops
  • Full-size video game consoles
  • Full-size DVD players
  • Video cameras that use video cassettes
  • CPAP breathing machines
Small and portable electronic items do not need to be removed from their carrying cases.

Essentially the earlier rule that applied to laptop computers and video cameras now also applies to other larger electronics. There were reports on FlyerTalk earlier this month of some TSA screeners who demanded that passengers remove all electronics from their bags, including iPods and battery chargers -- but that seems to be a misinterpretation of the new rule by some TSA locations or individuals.

My kids always have their Ipods in their hands and their cell phones in their pockets, I guess that's why it's just easier for us to throw them all into a bin!
