I would love to know as well. I maybe buying two one for DS12 and one for DD who will be 8 on Christmas Eve. This will be about all they get along with a few small things and iTune gift cards.

I would buy a refurbished one directly from Apple.

I think it would be perfectly fine for a 9 year old. My cousin is 6 and loves her mom's, she loves to play angry birds.

Is your 9 year old going to take care of it? If so, I wouldn't hesitate. I would however, put parental restrictions on it so they can't just download whatever they wanted from the App store.

We have decided to get one for our 9 and 7 year old DD's This is their big gift. I have an old iPod Touch that they are always fighting over. The great option i like is the facetime they can use to talk to my Mom and some other family members that have Iphones or Ipod Touches They also love texting Grandma and Grandpa from my phone and DD9s prepaid cellphone. Games are cheaper than their Nintendo DS's HUGE plus. And it will work much like a personal computer to watch funny youtube videos or on the road they can watch their own movies. I like the multi functions and I know the kids will enjoy their own iPod's. Budget wise we have never spent this much on a single gift for any of our children but again those small gifts always end up thrown to the side so we are cutting out the small things that are a waste of money anyways

I just bought a reburbished Ipod touch from the apple store. It is the older model but 32gb. I have not given it to him yet but if you buy from apple you still get the one year warranty.

He will use it for games, movies, music and apps.

I had to watch the store inventory because stock comes in and out but I saved over 30% by buying the refurb.

I guess the only con is the online accessibility. It makes it a little harder to monitor online activity.

We purchased 2 refurbished iPod Touch from Apple last year for Christmas. One was for our 7 year old and the other for our 9 year old. We were a little afraid that they wouldn't be able to handle the responsibility of owning an item like this at their young ages. However, they were the single best item that we have ever given them as gifts. They have played with them every day since Christmas 2010 and have been extremely responsible with them. We purchased a few iTunes cards so that they can decide what games or songs they would like to purchase (after approval by Mom and Dad) and do this pretty much on their own. $50 of iTunes credits has taken them almost the whole year to spend so they really haven't been going too overboard with the purchases. There are many games that are free, so that helps.

You really have to look at your children and decide if they are ready. Or, if you are ready to take the time to teach them to be responsible. At first it required a few reminders until they developed a routine of making sure that their iPod was charged and put away when not being used. It's a learning experience for them, but it has been an overall great experience.

OOH..also, if you can swing it...don't buy anything older than the 4th Generation. My kids love Facetime and their friends who got older generations were really let down that they can't Facetime their friends. Spend the extra $$ ...it's worth it.

I bought one for my then 10 yr old daughter last Christmas. Best gift ever! She loves it. She use to play with her DSi all the time and now she never touch it. The games are much cheaper than DS games also.

We bought a refurbished one last year for "me" because we didn't want the girls fighting over it and didn't want to get 2 until we knew if they would like it. I bought the touch instead of going the DS route because of the cost of the games. DD7 really likes it but dd4 loves it. She really likes downloading books and playing Tinkerbell and of course Fruit ninja and Angry birds but they have some good educational games as well helping her with spelling and reading. Best thing we could have bought!!!

i bought a refurbished 32g one from Apple a couple of years ago for my older son, i just purchased today an 8g one for my younger son (199.99) the model w/facetime and a camera i will give to my younger son (9 years old) for Hanukkah - he wants one sooo bad!

I definitly recommend getting the refurbished from Apple!

We were going to get DD a Nintendo DS, decided to get an iPod touch instead (when she was only 5.5 years old.) I got her a pink Otterbox case from Amazon and she is SO careful with it. So far no regrets buying it! Even my DH thinks it was a smart buy. When I buy DVDs I try to get them with a digital download so she has movies, and she can also stream Netflix and HBOGo from my parent's HBO account. I love no longer dragging the portable DVD player on trips and though the airport.

Every app we have bought was $1.99 or less, but most were free or only $.99. Much better than $20-30 per DS game! We also have a family iPad and it is great that all her apps are on that also.

So they CAN watch movies and play games on them (downloaded and bought on Itunes??), they CAN facetime other people (only others with facetime....other IPOD Touch people, and maybe IPHONE people?? They CAN take movies/pictures with it?? They CAN go online and surf the internet? There is a Kindle-like app to go with it?? And can they buy apps like the IPHONE???

But they CAN NOT text or make phone calls??

Also, all the songs we've already download for their IPODS, I'm assuming can be transfered to the touch??

Absolutely correct,

Although actually with the Text-free app (i think that's what it's called, not entirely sure), they CAN text, but they cannot make true phone calls.

Great gift for 9yo!!!

It's like a step before a cell phone. My 10 yo DD wanted one so bad last year she used her Christmas money her great grandmom gave her to pay for half of the I Touch and then we kicked in the other half.

It is great for music, movies, games, chatting on face time, and with text free I can also text her and she can to my cell.

We have had a few scares with her misplacing it - in the house. But that in turn also taught her how to be aware of where she puts it and put it in the same spot when she is done with it.

It is very useful on long trips too or when you have to wait around. We got our 6yo DS one in the springtime. We got him the 8gig whereas DD has the 32 gig. He was always wanting time on hers so that eliminated squabbles. For him though I'm the one who carries it around if we are going out, otherwise if I'm not with him it stays home.

My 10 yo and 8-yo DS both want one. They both have iPod Nanos and have done well with those, so we'll probably get them each a touch for Christmas. More than likely, they will get refurbished ones from Apple, if I can find them.

Great thread! I am in the same position, both DD10 & DD7 want these. I am waiting impatiently on getting my first iPhone, which will hopefully be next week. DD10 wants a cell phone, and keeps asking me for an iPhone. Yeah, I laughed so hard! Instead maybe she will be hitting up the grandparents for one of these.

Since the new iPhone might (hopefully!) come out next week, perhaps there is a chance that a new Touch will be coming out soon too. So be on the lookout for how that changes the pricing structure.

Question- I had read that the 8Gb might not be enough memory and to consider getting the 32 Gb. Any truth to that? My girls have a Macbook (last year's granparent gift) so they could download whatever videos they want to keep onto that. TIA!

We purchased one last year for dd's 11th bday and it has been great! My other dd wants one now and I can't blame her at all! I love that size for movies/ videos. Poor dd10 watches her movies/ videos on her nano. We will be getting one for xmas this year.

I think you all have talked me into getting them for my DDs (9 and almost 7 at Christmas) too!

I do have a questions about downloading songs/apps/etc. When you buy something at iTunes, does it only go onto one device? Or can you put it on all devices that are on your account? Like if both girls want the same app, do I buy it twice? Just trying to determine how much I should get in gift cards to get them started. Thanks!
