DD has been saving her $ and wants an Ipod touch, what is the difference between the 2nd and 3rd generation and should she get an 8 gb or 16 gb? She has the Nano now, last years Christmas present, but her friend has the itouch and she said it does so much more than the nano???
Has anyone had luck with the refurbs from Apple?

If you are looking for the 16gb, you will have to go with the 2nd gen. model. The 3rd only comes in 8, 32, & 64gb. I just bought a 32gb 3rd gen. on Saturday to replace my 1st gen. I love it!!! I'm getting my daughter an 8gb for Christmas. With all the deals coming up...I would say your best bet is to go with the 8gb 3rd gen. Good luck!!

From what I've read, the only difference between the 2nd Gen. and the 3rd Gen. 8GB is a software update that is availabe through the Itunes store for around 4.95. If this is true, you may have a better deal by purchasing the
2nd generation and then purchasing the software upgrade.

Thanks! She does want the 3rd generation after reading the article posted above. I still don't understand the difference. 8 gb sounds like it will be enough.

I bought my son a refurbished touch from apple last Christmas and we have not had any trouble. I would definitely recommend it. I must say that has been one of the few Christmas presents that has been worth the $$$. He uses it everyday (unless he is grounded..lol!!).

the 8 gig 3rd generation does not have any improvements over the the 2nd generation according to cnet. If you daughter likes the improvements on the 3rd generation update and wants those you will have to purchase at least a 32 gig model to get them

Not every member of the third-generation iPod Touch family is created equally. Essentially, the 8GB iPod Touch model is still running on second-generation hardware that uses a slower processor than the 32GB and 64GB models and lacks support for new features such as Voice Control, OpenGL graphic support, and advanced accessibility features. As we've already seen with the first-generation Touch, future updates to the iPod firmware may bring features that only the latest hardware will support. Obviously, the 8GB model's $199 price tag makes it attractive to prospective buyers, but be aware that the lower price comes at the cost of performance and a few features.

the 8 gig 2nd gen refurbish at the apple store is $149

8GB will only hold about 4-6 movies depending on the size of the movies. It all depends on what she will be using it for.

I'm thinking she should spend a little more and get the 3rd generation 32 now. The voice control would be a neat feature and she is wanting to download several movies to watch on the way to DC for their class trip this year. Ipods are allowed, I just hoping it makes it home (to our home!). Maybe cell phones were missing last year.
