IPod Insurance question

If I buy the Ipod touch from TRU on Black Friday because the are offering a $50 GC with purchase how can I get insurance for the Ipod. My son is only 11 and I wanted the extended warranty. Do I buy it through TRU or call Apple? Thanks

I have been reading on a few apple forums that the apple warranty is not that great.

I also believe here some people say that Best Buy has a really good one not sure about TRU extended warranty.

I know that is not alot of help except for the Apple info.
 
TRU will offer you their extended warranty, or Buyer Protection Plan. It should be somewhere around $22.99 I think (it is based on the price of the product) It will be for 15 months. I'm not sure exactly what it covers on Ipods, but we sell them at BRU where I work and basically if the item you purchased the plan for breaks or is damaged, you can send the BPP company a copy of your receipt and they will refund you the amount of the product.

seems to be...I don't have any first hand experience, but that is what my managers tell me on how it works:confused3 and I don't know if there are any specific exclusions for Ipods.

OP ~ When I go to work on Wednesday I'll grab a BPP pamphlet and bring it home to read all the fine print. I can post back with what I find out. Might be good to know what it covers before you go in to TRU on BF.

I should clarify that the warranty is technically for 12 months, starting on the 91 day after purchase. The store return policy is 90 days and the BPP starts on the 91st day, so 15 months total coverage.
 
I know that I have had great experiences with AppleCare. My daughter's ear buds broke twice during the warranty period of one of her iPods, and they were replaced without any problem at all. Being able to actually call their technical help line after the 90 days WITHOUT being charged for it really mattered when she had problems re-setting and re-synchronizing it with her iTunes library.

When I bought dd's touch at TRU they quoted me a higher price for the warranty. I don't recall what it was because I didn't get it. I ended up with a warranty from squaretrade, 3 years with ADH for less than $35 (with a coupon code).

it might be higher than $22.99....I can't remember the price points off the top of my head. I know the price of the BPP is based on the price of the item purchased, so depending on which Ipod is purchased, the price of the BPP will vary.

Just remember that any type of third-party "protection" is really a service contract and NOT a true warranty. Its administered not by Toys R Us or whomever may be selling it, but another company.

Watch for this phrase in the terms and conditions...especially for the part in bold:

"We will repair or replace the Product, or reimburse You for authorized repairs to or replacement of the Product, at Our discretion."

Basically that means that THEY decide whether to actually send you a refund or not. You can't say "Its broken...here's my receipt, I want my money back". They don't have to send it.

I put "toys r us buyer protection plan" into google and a lot of comments popped up...some good, and some not so good.

The bottom line is really know and understand the terms and conditions of whatever type of protection plan you are purchasing, or you could find that you're just throwing money away.
 
Applecare is FANTASTIC. It covers it for 2 years and if anything goes wrong, they replace it. You can buy it from the apple.com store.
 
no issues with apple care at all either. Oldest has three ipods and has sent them in a few times for repairs. He has had more problems with is first gen itouch though and they've been great about replacing it or fixing it. Whenever we've called to send it in, we usually get the return package the next day and it's usually returned in about a week.

One thing, if it is water damage, they will not fix or replace it.
 
Apple is great to work with - if you have a problem, simply give them a call, they send a replacement via FedEx (usually received next business day) and you place the broken item in the same packaging to return to them.

One morning during a thunderstorm, evidently our cable was hit because our modem quit working and had to be replaced by cable company. Well, the Apple Airport (wireless router) quit working at the same time. It was a couple of years old, but called Apple for trouble-shooting help. While on the phone, we determined that it was 'dead' and needed to be replaced. Since the Airport is used with my Macbook and I have AppleCare on my Macbook, the Airport is covered and was replaced free of charge! I was very pleased. :woohoo:
 
I've also been very happy with Apple's customer service. I have AppleCare on both my iPod (2 years) and my MacBook (3 years). I have Apple stores near me too which makes it even more convenient. I can just make an appointment at the Genius Bar, take my product in & they will fix it. If they can't fix it, they'll replace it right then.
 
yes. My oldest bought his itouch through BB and extended the warranty online through Apple.
 
look into when you need to do it. I know we missed one by a day and it limited the time I think. I would have to ask him for sure but I think that is what happened. I know his battery was going and it was cheaper to buy the extended warranty than to send in the unit to replace the battery.

Yes. Buy Applecare from the online store at Apple.com (or an apple store if you have one nearby.) If you qualify for education pricing at Apple. the applecare is discounted.
