It seems that I read somewhere, maybe here, about getting on a pay as you go plan that uses SIM cards and buying an iPhone elsewhere and using it with a pay as you go plan?

Can anyone enlighten me?

Any that don't require you to buy a new phone for $650?

Seems there was something about buying used iPhones and putting SIM cards in them and being able to use them with a phone plan but internet only in wifi range or something.

I'd be very surprised. Most of the pay as you go plans require you to purchase the phone for the plan from them and none of them offer iPhone as an option right now.

It wasn't offered FROM the pay as you go company, it was a way to use an iPhone with the plan by swapping out SIM cards.

T-Mobile sells prepaid SIM cards that will work in an AT&T iPhone (has to be AT&T). Your only choice for getting the phone cheaply is to buy one on the used market.

I see, maybe that was it.

Yes, I was looking at a used one. No way I would pay $650 for a phone.

I have an iPhone 3GS and an AT&T prepaid, about $32 a month after tax. It was kinda crazy, I had to purchase the prepaid SIM put it in my phone, make a call, then an AT&T guy did some typing and I put my original SIM back in my phone (so I got to keep my cell #) and viola - iPhone on the AT&T network, $32 a month! I can use my phone in Wifi spots and have limited (30mb) data plan when wifi isn't available. Highly recommend visiting an AT&T store and just let them know what you want to do. They were very helpful.

Interesting that they were fine with it. I thought you had to kind of back door it.

I don't currently have a SIM card (we have Sprint) so how would I do that? Would I need to buy one of their phones first?

What exactly does your plan have? Minutes? Texting?

Wow, sorry mommy-brain, I have T-mobile. $30 plan with 1500 minutes/text and 30MB data. I have an unlocked iPhone. When you first purchase the month to month they set you up with a SIM card. They didn't have any issues at all setting my plan up with the unlocked iPhone.

Thank you. I will look around and ask questions there. If I can do this for under $50/mo I am IN!

The people on howardforums that have iphone4 running on prepaid also that is another option to consider.

They are telling me that an iPhone will work, BUT I cannot get the data plan on the iPhone with the prepaid. I can't quite figure out why yet.

I think I see the plan you are talking about.

Now, another question. 30MB is not much. If you are in wifi range can you switch to use that on your iPhone so as to not hog up the data?

The $50 plan might be a better option for me.
