Okay, DH wants to give me an IPhone for Christmas, but the acct is in my name, so he had to blow the surprise. :) Anyway, I need budgetary advice....we have AT&T Family, with three lines, DH, me, and DD and pay the unlimited texting. I noticed when I was tallying up, it asked if I wanted "IPhone" texting. Do I have to pay more for texting on this phone than what I pay for my old phone, with the $30 unlimited?? Also, is there any point in getting more than 8GB of memory? TIA.

Texting is not automatically included in your plan, you have to pay for it extra each month. You can still text w/o a plan, but you'll just have to pay for each text you receive and send. I'm not a HUGE texter so I went without it.....if I start using it a lot, I'd probably see about adding it on. I think wasn't it $4.95/month? I think texts are 30 or 40 cents. Guess I should look at that and see how many I normally send!!!

I have the 8g model and am perfectly happy with it. I have quite a few apps, some songs and have BARELY tapped into the space that it has. Unless you're loading 1000's of songs or lots of movies, you should be fine.

What a great present! Enjoy! I've had mine for 10 months and don't know what I would do without it.

No. Texting with iPhone is an extra expense. I started with 200 for $5.00.month and I had to upgrade because I kept going over.

I have the 8GB. I have a movie, 150 songs, and about 10 books on it, with over 3GB left, so you should be ok unless you want to carry more than that with you.

Well that doesn't seem right. So our unlimited family texting is good on every phone BUT iPhone? Well I may be passing on this present... :(

K, so the regular texting plan for unlimited texting does not apply to iPhone?

Yes, your unlimited family texting plan will cover the texting on your iphone as well.

Texting is not included with the new iphone plans (it still is since I have the original plan) but you can add the iphone to your existing family plan and just pay the $30 data plan additional for the iphone. The rest of the family plan should remain the same.

That's why I passed. It seemed like a rip off to me. I have my touch and then I got the Samsung Impression and I'm quite happy with it. We were on Tracfone but with 5 soon to be 6 phones it's too expensive. The 6th line right now is Page Plus Cellular.

I totally agree. We have 5 iphones on our family plan and pay the $30 a month for all of us to have unlimited texting.

E have 2 iphones and the unlimited texting DOES cover the iphone. You do have to pay an extra 30/month for the mandatory data package.

Just to confirm yes the $30 you already pay will cover your texting on the iPhone. The only extra fees will be the $30 data plan for the iPhone. However if you already have unlimited data on your current phone then you are most likely already paying it :) I love my iPhone I hope u do too :)

greentea is correct if you have unlimited family plan texting then your iphone is included. The only new charge will be the $30 data for the iphone.

We have 4 lines on our family plan and have unliomited family texting and the 2 iphones on our plan are covered.

in regards to size. I think you need to think about how long yuo will have the phone for (are you the type that gets a new phone every 2 or so years? or do you keep your phone forever?) and think about what you will use the phone for and the commute you make.

DH has an 8gig iphone. he drives 10 mins to work and has about 3 gigs of music. He also works out about 45 mins a day. the 3 gigs of music he has will get him through days of his commute and work out. He has tons of apps but reguarly weeds them out and still has about 2 gigs free. he has had the phone for about 18 months.

I have a 16 gig iphone. I have about 10 gigs of music another 2 gigs of video and a variety of apps that take up another 3 gigs. I take a bus into NYC and my commute is about an hour in the morning and 1.5 hours in the evening. I walk from the bus station to my office and back so i need about 5 hours of music a day when you add in working out. I don't want to listen to the same 5 hours every day as i enjoy quite a bit of variety.

I got the highest gig iphone when we got ours and when I am eligible for an upgrade i will get the highest that is available. Prior to this i had the 64gig ipod and it was nearly full of music and videos. I actually had to pare down my selections.

So, if you aren't a power user then i think 8g will be plenty.

this thread is probably the most confusing thing I've ever read!!

So if you pay your regular voice plan (mine is 59$) and then the 30$/m for the iphone, it does NOT include txt?

I'm trying to decide whether i want to get an iphone or not. :headache:

sorry you got confused by some of the posts.

No texting would not be included. If however you already have family unlimited texting or unlimited texting on your current number it would remain the same.

I also think there is a minium per month charge which I think is $69 a month so it would be as followed for 1 phone.

$69 regular voice plan
$30 iphone data plan
$5-20 unlimited texting and if you have other phones on the plan then unlimited texting on all phone can be bought for $30

so you minium charge per month for an iphone with texting is $104.00
or $119 with unlimited texting on the one phone

$5 gets you 200 texts

hope that made it a bit clearer.

I wanted to bump this thread. I think it's wrong that the texting is not included in the $30 iphone data plan. I've copied this from the ATT site.

it looks like for the $30 you get unlimited texts, but i've read such conflicting advice from people all over the internet.

maybe I should call because I am paying $5 extra a month for 200 and the way that reads you sound right to me, reads like it should be included.

I think this is for non-smart phones.
