What insurance do you like for the iphone? I'm getting it from Verizon, and their insurance has a deductible of $199, which seems steep. What other companies offer a good plan? This phone is for my teenaged son, and I'm concerned about damage/loss.

I bought apple ICARE for my DD15. Thankfully she never had to use it but it was99 with a 49 copay if damaged. 2 year contract and the ability to file 2 claims.

I just upgraded her to the new iphone and the time left on the icare 2 year contract was 4 months so they prorated me back the months. Now however it is 99 for a new contract but 79 per claim. But you need to purchase apple icare pretty quickly after buying the phone. you can call apple directly and buy over the phone. FYI I never tell DD it is insured!!!

I use Square Trade for all my electronics. Just had to use is for my DD's iPhone 4s - the wifi stopped working. No problems with getting a replacement phone. Check them out squaretrade.com

I second SquareTrade. I've had very good service through them and their plans are reasonable.

Third Squaretrade. They always have a coupon floating around, and it even works on the monthly plan. The deductible is $75 on iphones. I have had to replace two kindles and it was quick and easy.

That seems steep, but it's still not bad considering the phone itself is at lest 3x that price.

I'll 2nd the lifeproof/otterbox cases. They can be just as pricey, but I'd never leave home without a case on it.

As far as the teenage son, kids are kids, but have some stricter rules with it. If you see that it is getting abused, you can always pull the charger (plug, lol) and take the phone back til they can behave enough to handle it responsibly.

Applecare for me. I've had my current phone replaced twice so far - the first was my fault (left it out in the rain), so we had to pay $99 to get a new phone. The second time there was some weird issue with the battery life - we just brought it in, they looked at it, and gave me a new phone (for free). I had my iPhone 4 replaced once and my 3G replaced once as well; both times the issues were my fault but they decided not to charge me for the replacement. I find the people at the Apple Store very nice and helpful!

Skip the insurance and get an Otterbox or Lifeproof case.

I like the Otterbox and the Lifeproof, but it doesn't help when your child's phone is stolen from a locked teacher's office at school during gym.

We have the Verizon insurance, OP, and I am also looking for something else. We pay $10 a month for DD's insurance and still had to pay $169 to replace her almost 2-year old 4S. If the thief had waited a few weeks, at least she would have been eligible for an upgrade for about the same price.

I don't think any of the other options listed here will cover a stolen phone. They're all "warranty" coverage, not insurance. I'm pretty sure only the carrier's insurance will cover that.

Thanks! I guess we stick with Verizon insurance just in case, at least until her contract is up.

I got Verizon insurance for the reason you mention. I am more concerned about her phone getting stolen than damaged. She has an Otterbox case but that doesn't do you much good if someone swipes the phone. I will eventually drop the insurance and I don't have it on any of our other phones, but with a 14-year-old and a new iphone, I decided to go ahead with it. It's highway robbery, but what isn't these days, sigh.

I really need something to cover lost/stolen. So sounds like Verizon is my best bet? :(

I got both for my teens. It's just way too expensive to replace and we have a 2 yr contract. Ds17 once lost a phone out a Velcro pocket on a roller coaster so it's not always about acting responsibly. I would have done the same thing myself. I would have held it for him while he rode but he was around 13 & riding with a cousin while dh & I waited for them. I wanted to be able to keep in touch in case he couldn't find us.

I second this, AppleCare is the only way to go. I wouldn't get another other insurance, especially the insurance the carriers provide. You pay and arm and a leg for the insurance and then they charge a huge deductible if anything goes wrong. I did it once and will NEVER do it again. I always get applecare. You get two years of manufacturers defects (if anything goes wrong they replace or fix it), two years of phone support which is amazing, and two incidents of accidental damage with a $79 deductible if the phone is replaced because of physical damage. And it's a one time fee of $99 for the coverage, you do have to buy it within 30 days of buying the device. I also only purchase my iPhones at the apple store, save on sales tax and they know what they are doing.

But again, AppleCare does not cover lost or stolen phones. If it did, I would gladly go that route.

Is this in addition to the 1 yr warranty that comes with it automatically?

We have At&T iphone 5s. I pay $7 a month. This covers breakage: accidental or otherwise and theft with a $199 deductible. I can use it 2 times in a 12 month period.
