My DH dropped his phone today.. The screen is fine but it needs to be restored. Whenever we try and restore it we are getting unknown error 28!!

We really cannot afford to get him a new phone right now.. any suggestions????

Oh no! Sorry bff! I hope it gets better soon.

PS...Why aren't you in chat? :(

Go to the Apple Store. It is probably a loose wire and easily fixed by them. They are really accommodating. My fiancee had the same thing happen and his warranty had just run out a couple weeks before. They fixed everything for free. If you are patient and get there when the store opens, they will help you. Otherwise, you can make an appointment online. They may exchange the phone with a different one too. I hope it is an easy fix! :)

Here are two "fixes" suggested on the apple support discussion boards. most said the first method didn't work.

Method one:
Phone OFF and unplugged.
Load iTunes.
Hold down the HOME button and connect the phone. Do not release the home button until 30sec after the APPLE logo appears.

Method two:
Had exactly the same problems and tried and tried. I nearly gave up when I stumbled accross another post which discussed downgrading from 3.1 to 3.0. And I found the problem and solution.
This is an extract from this article which will help you all to fix the stupid error 28!

"So, we begin: hold down the lock and menu buttons (some call these the power and home buttons) for 10 seconds, letting go of the lock button but continuing to hold menu until iTunes recognizes the device with the message: “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”.

Note that, at this point, your iPhone’s screen should be entirely black. Many people confuse “DFU” with “recovery” (and in fact, iTunes itself glosses over this), but they are quite different. If you see anything on your screen, such as the iTunes logo and a sync cable, or a cartoon of Steve Jobs swearing in Cyrillic, you are in recovery mode and need to try again. One can find videos online that may help."

My phone's screen was never black when I did the restore and so it never worked. However, I did what he says a couple of times and managed to get this black screen and the restore worked first time!

Had same problem. Hold the home button and lock button until it turns off and the apple appears and then connect to computer

Ok So here is an update... Bad news.. I could get none of your fixes to work.

Good news: We made an appointment at the apple store for 7:40 and by 7:45 the genius gave us a new phone. I do not think we were still under warrenty but I was not complaining (DH was cause he was going to use this as his excuse to upgrade to the 3GS)

I have promised him the 3GS for Christmas so he is going to have to wait a few more months.

Thanks for all of your advice!!
