iPhone emergency alerts - grrrr

OP, I was driving yesterday morning on the highway and got those exact same alerts! Trust me, the second I got home I went right to settings and turned them off. Scared me half to death.

We have Verizon. I have a Galaxy S4 and my wife and son have iPhones (4 for Mrs. Tex and 5 for Tex Jr.) So far, I'm the only one who's ever gotten any alerts, and I do NOT have any weather widgets downloaded that don't come preloaded on the phone.

The first couple of Amber alerts I got were startling to say the least, which is why I disabled all of these special alerts. If your phone starts hooting at you in a business meeting, it tends to make you rather unpopular, and can have very bad results. If it starts hooting in the middle of the night, (as some PP can testify!) it scares the bejeebus out of you for no good reason at all.

My phone did that a few weeks ago! I wasn't smart enough to look it up and see why it happened. I asked DH, who swore I must have installed some app, but I knew I hadn't.

I was driving when it happened. The sky was dark and gray, so when I heard the noise, I knew it was a weather warning. The surprising part was that I was listening to my iPod on the stereo system--not the radio. I wondered how I was getting a radio warning when the radio wasn't on. I turned the volume all the way down and then realized it was coming from my phone. It was just a flood warning, and since I was 2 miles from my house (that's on the top of a hill), I didn't really worry about it. It would be nice for tornadoes. We can technically hear the sirens from my house, but with 5 boys, sometimes our own noise level is too high to hear them. We just moved to a town that doesn't have reverse 911 service, so I was wondering what I should do to get weather alerts.

The first time mine went off for this I was in my office and about 12 phones(all the patients in the waiting room) went off at the same time, LOL!

Very worthwhile having. It went off last week for a tornado warning(I'm in NJ, so we don't get many tornados), but darn if one didn't hit about a mile from the office!

The first time we got one was while driving on the freeway going 75 mph and passing a semi-truck. It scared everyone in the car. The alert was turned off on all the phones. I really don't like the idea of a loud alert that can startle and alarm the driver at any time.
