My DD17 is almost to the end of her 2 year commitment to AT&T for her 4S. She plans to ask for the next 5 for Christmas. Her 4s was replaced under Apple Care last month so it will be a nearly brand new phone when she upgrades. dH and I would like to keep it but really don't want to stay at AT&T. We prefer a cheaper "pay as you go" plan.

Is there any way to use the phone with a different carrier?

AT&T Gophone ... is an option (prepaid/no contract)

If you are considering keeping your daughter on a contract plan (you mentioned you were "upgrading" which requires a 2 year contract) consider adding the old 4s and creating a family plan.

You will pay an additional $30/mo for that 2nd phone ($10 for the line, $20 for the data) If she's staying on a contract, changing her plan from a "individual" to a "family" plan could be far cheaper than you going no-contract.

We have 3 iphones in our household and it is actually cheaper for us to be in a family plan on contract than all go seperate pay-as-you-go. I think PAYG is a great option for a single phone, but 2 smart phones may actually be cheaper on a family plan.

There might be an option to have it unlocked by AT&T... I think they will unlock it if you are/or have been a customer in good standing and don't owe them any money and there are no flags about the phone (stolen etc...)

maybe use it on Straight Talk or T-Mobile. I am not endorsing it, but I heard of a carrier called "Lycamobile", people have been saying good things about them.

If it is at&t you should be able to remove the at&t sim card and put in the pay-as-you-go sim card, easy peasy. Lol
