IPad??? What does it do exactly?

I am already confused, LOL.

I facebook chatted with my younger brother who used to work the help desk at Apple and knows the ins and outs.

He said that an ipad 2 16gb should be plenty. But now I am looking at the new ipod mini and it is about the same size as a kindle and seems to be a bit better. As well as $70 cheaper.

http://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/

I know it will probably come down to me asking DS which one he prefers.

But can anybody compare the ipad mini and ipad2 for me who has used them?

Pretty please??? He will use it for skype, games, music, internet.

My brother said that if he will use it for skype he would probably want the bigger screen.

I want to get things squared away before Black Friday. I don't want to have to search the world to find my son's gift.
The iPad mini will have slightly faster WiFi, I believe. The screens are going to be about the same, quality wise. I would go with the newer of the two devices since they'll be similar in price anyway.

How old is your son? Is he careful with his electronics? I think the iPad Mini would be a good choice. The screen will be fine for Skype.

I would get on the ball ordering it though if you're going with the Mini..it's going to be a popular gift this year.

Probably the easies thing to do is Google "how do I print from an iPad" Something will come up. That's my go-to source for how to do anything on my phone/computer lol.

There is no app that I ever had to purchase to print with my wireless printer. If I want to print from my iPad, I touch the box with the arrow coming out (don't know how else to explain) An option box pops up (mail, twitter, bookmark, etc.) and I press Print. It searches for printers and finds my printer over the wifi network.

Anyway, that is how it works for me, but if I were you, I would google so you can try other things, etc.,
If the printer is an AirPrint printer, then you probably don't need an app. You can still print from a wireless printer even if it's not an AirPrint printer, but an app is needed. There are several on the App Store. I use Printer Pro.

My son will be 16 and is an only child who is incredibly careful about his electronics. He is super careful about his ipod touch - screen protector and plastic "bounceable" case. He still has his original Nintendo DS's - and his GBA, and they are in perfect condition.

I am really leaning towards the mini, since it is newer and seems to be slightly better than the ipad2.

We signed up and were approved for the Disney Chase Visa, so as soon as that arrives we are going to decide what to get.

It looks like the mini is slightly bigger than my kindle fire is.

"-to teach on Sundays...there is an app that allows him to create word docs
-to surf the internet
-for email
-for travel he loads movies onto it and watches on the plane
-to Skype/Facetime which allows us to talk to each other while he is gone
-for music
-books/magazine downloads
-games"
The new Kindle fires can do all this.
You can use Google docs.

Otherwise the only difference in my opinion is the name and price. I had an ipad but returned it when they announced the new Kindle fire. I am patiently :rolleyes1 for it's release. I went with the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" 4G LTE Wireless because of the 4G option for only $49.99 a year. Most of the time I will be using the free wifi but it is nice to have the 4G when I need it. I have less than 250 MB of data of my phone and have never used it all. (Some people say it is not enough). With ipad you have data plans but you have to pay each month. I also like the 32gb storage versus ipads 16gb. I was willing to give up the rear facing camera because I have an iphone for that or my regular digital camera I would rather use.
My biggest complaint for any of the tablets is the lack of flash support. There are a number of sites I go on for work that use flash and I have not found any tablet that supports flash. Also no cafe world :scared:

The only thing is that I mentioned Kindle (the newer ones are cool!) and he said he really wanted an ipad.

In the past, I have gotten him things that I have thought would be better but they turned out not to be (one year I got him a laptop - a gift he didn't want - and he ended up selling it to get an ipod touch - a gift he DID want).

I know I want to get him an ipad, even though I would prefer he get a Kindle fire of some sort.

Right now I am torn between the Ipad2 and the mini. Because I know it has to be one of those.

Your right about getting him what he wants or he won't be happy. My son is the same way. Now he gets cash.
DD wants an ipad I tried to tell her the kindle hd would be better but she insists on the ipad but I am not willing to spend that much on her. She does not take care of her things. Complete opposite of DS. So she will not get either this year. Now she wants a bowling ball. :crazy2:

If you want him to be able to read on it, you can get the Kindle app, the Nook app, and the Kobo app. And the Mini looks like a good size for reading.

Good luck. I'm sure he'll love it. I have the regular size iPad and use it all the time. Ranks up there as one of my favorite gadgets ever.

My DD wanted a kindle fire (since she is always taking mine) , then instead she wanted a droid tablet ( i forget which one) from costco. She had the tablet from costco from about a month, and we wound up returning since she would rather use her itouch.
The ipad responds so much better than the kindle fire.
Since you know he wants an ipad, I would ask him which one he wants.

I did ask and he is not sure. He just knows he wants one.

The mini has Siri, which could be fun for a teenager. I am sooo torn!!

He has never whined about the size of my Kindle at all. In fact between him playing Angry Birds and DH playing Coin Dozer, I rarely see my kindle anymore!

Edited :

YAY!! I talked to him today and he said that the Ipad Mini sounds like what he wants. He is so used to my smaller screen that he thinks the screen won't bug him and thinks the Siri would be pretty cool (as I thought).

Now to convince DH...........

We did look at other options before deciding to go with the iPad, but we liked the bigger screen, the touch seemed more responsive, and the image was sharper with the iPad. There are tons more apps to choose from with the iPad and the integration with our iPhones was a big selling point for us. There is a reason that it gets better reviews. You do have to weigh that against the cost and your budget. We personally thought it was worth it and we love our iPads. If my DH were to specifically say that he preferred the iPad, then I would definitely get the iPad. :goodvibes

The Ipad vs the Kindle
or
the Ipad vs the Ipad Mini?

If he already has an iPod touch, find out what features he wants from the iPad. Will buying a mini just make his device look more hip but really he's just doing things he could do on the touch?

We compared the regular iPad vs. Kindle and other tablets...at the time, there was no iPad mini option. This year, DD is getting an iPad. We discussed the mini and if it had been closer in price to the kindle, we might have chosen the mini. Since it is not significantly cheaper, we will get her the regular iPad. We like the bigger screen.

The end is here!!!

I purchased a 16gb White Ipad2 **Refurbished** from the Apple website for $320. YAY!!! Can't beat 20% off!

Wow, never knew the apple site sold re furnished. Great deal

Thank you. I checked with my brother after I purchased it and he also confirmed it was a good deal, but ONLY if it is Apple selling it.

I am so glad the drama is over. I really wanted to purchase one before Black Friday. I only have a few gifts to purchase and I am DONE!!

Good for you! I hope you don't mind my making a suggestion. It is a good idea to buy a protective cover. We purchased a hard back and front cover for our iPads. I just purchased a set for the iPad that we are getting for DD...it was on Amazon for $20 and was a pretty baby blue. By Christmas the pickings will be slim. The hard cover protects the back and the corners. The flexible front cover easily removes or can be folded behind the iPad to create a stand. When it is closed, it will put the iPad to sleep. The set is two separate pieces and comes in many colors.

My brother already said he got one for DS. Knowing him, who used to work at Apple, it is a good one.

Thanks for the advice though.
:)
