I am getting an iPad to use with my 8yo son, who has autism. He has an iPod which he takes pretty good care of but it does get a bit grungy. What kind of case to you suggest for an iPad? I'm mostly concerned that it protect against drops and dirty hands. A built in screen protector would be good. If you have one that you love I would like to hear about it!

I work in an elementary school and use my iPad with all of my students who have special needs. The Otterbox case has protected the iPad from a couple of hard landings on the floor with no screen or case damage. I also have one on my iPhone, which fell into the door frame on my car as I was shutting it. The Otterbox case cracked, but the iPhone survived without a scratch. :cool1:

Thanks, I have an otterbox on my phone and its held up pretty well.

I have one made by Griffin. It is hard plastic covered by rubber. They market it as "military-strength". It comes with a screen protector and a stand. I got it at Best Buy.

I just talked to a friend who has a Griffin Defender. Another friend has a Gumdrop. Both say they are the best LOL

GUMDROP is fantastic. Check it out on Amazon. The back is made of a rubber-like material that looks like a truck tire. That would be very appealing to a boy. The front has a built in screen protector. I've dropped it dozens of times- no damage!

It's red and black- so very boyish.

My 8 yr old daughter has ADHD and she hasn't managed to damage it yet, so I think it's great for a special needs kid. And if i remember correctly, it was cheaper than the otterbox.

I had a Trident, now we have an Otterbox on my son's iPad. He is also autistic and has down syndrome.

He uses the wonderful speech app, called Proloquo to Go. It has made a huge impact on his ability to communicate with us (he has no conversational speech).

I ended up buying this one on ebay. I think he is going to like it :)

Thanks :) My son fortunately is verbal, but we still have a long way to go with social skills, processing, inference, etc. I'm so glad PTG has helped your son, I love that the iPad has made such a difference for so many people.

Last night via iPod my son played "Draw Something" with his 23yo sister who is 450 miles away at college, while they also talked on FaceTime. It was so amazing to me that this little device could do such amazing things, and give him such an engaging social experience!
