you are right! before the prices were announced people were sepculating it would cost anywhere from 600 to 1000. I want one but like you I will wait and see what the price does after a few monts. They better not decide and raise the price!

The pundits were right that is the exact price point. The cheapest iPad with 3G is $629 (only 16GB).

Read yesterday that the starting price for the downloadable books is $14.95 each. I'm really hoping that there will be "free" books available, or that the library will start offering downloadable books in the correct format. Our library already has downloadable audio books and music that you can 'borrow.'

I am really excited about this device. Love my iPod Touch, and really like the added iBook feature and the ability to use the 3G network.

There are already loads of free books available. Check out my free app thread for some available I will try and add more. There are already several apps for reading books including the Kindle app.

it is actually $499 not $629 it is $629 if you want to add the 3g service option to it, not everyone will. When compared to an ipod touch it is a little steep considering the 32 gig touch is around $300. I would like to see the ipad price drop at least $100 per unit or not charge for the 3g option as to use it you have to pay ATT $30 a month to do so, I think it would then be more in line of where it should be.

I think they will hve to drop the price b/c so many people are already saying that they are going to wait and see if they drop the price like they did on the Itouch/iphone. It seems like it will become a self fulfilling prophecy -no one is buying so they will lower the cost.

Apple would be much smarter to announce a six month price guarantee when it first comes out and if they drop the price - then they will give a credit to those who had already bought them.

I agree that not everyone will want the 3G, but what I was reading and the technology podcast I listen to that were guessing prices included the 3G capabilities. So my point was simply that their pricing guesses were correct.

I'm definitely planning on getting one, but only the Wi-Fi version and probably won't purchase it until the fall. This would be MUCH nicer to carry around when we fly to DL and WDW than my laptop and with 10 hours battery use time (and a month stand-by) it would definitely help! I got my daughter a MacMini but lately I've spent more time on it than she has (I like it better than my PC laptop) so the iPad would be great for her to use.

I'm not getting one as soon as they come out because the first alpha release ALWAYS has bugs, and chances are the price will get reduced.

I think that they're going to have to reduce the price. From everything I've read about the iPad, it's essentially a big iTouch. I'm a big apple fan. I have an iPhone and a MacBook Air laptop. But I also have a Kindle.

I just can't think of a reason that I'd need or want one. And I'd never pay an extra $30 for 3G service, since 3G in my area isn't so great....and that's the case in a lot of areas from what I read.

yeah I think $30 a month is crazy too. I think they may have to lower the price on that also. It is good that you have no contracts though so when you need the 3g on vacation you can activate it for a month and cancel it again once home and you can use the wifi at home.

There is only one place in the US I've been that has a consistently strong 3G signal--and that's in the MK resort area! I'm serious! And if the 3G in your area isn't strong you wind up running on the EDGE network which is about as fast as a pregnant elephant running a marathon...

Yeah, like I said, we're big apple fans. I've got the iPhone, MacBook Air. DH has a MacBook, and iPhone and I got him the new iMac for Christmas just for him to use in his music room. So, we don't seem to have any trouble coming up with reasons to purchase Apple products....and yet, the iPad just isn't doing it for me at that price.

Maybe if we traveled a lot more than we do....we typically take one big vacation a year....I could talk myself into it for viewing movies and surfing the net via WiFi. I'd never add 3G, as the 3G network on AT&T sucks. The second they offer the iPhone on any other network I'll drop AT&T like a hot potato. As it is, I rarely turn on 3G and just operate on the Edge network....otherwise I drop calls. But right now, I just don't see buying one at all. Plus, it seems a little big for an e-reader.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's innovative, but unlike the iPhone or iPod, I think we'll see Apple make big changes in the second generation of this product. Unlike the iMacs, MacBooks, iPods and iPhones, I think that Apple is going to have to work hard to convince consumers that they really *need* this product.

It was funny to me to see this and the prior post talking about problems with the 3G network. We live in Central California and have no probelm with 3G. When I am the passenger and my DH is driving up and down US 101, I surf the web like crazy, checking traffic, following the weather map, reading the DIS and even checking airline and hotel prices! Before the iphone, I never imagined doing this and now I can't imagine not having internet access while driving! I could definitely see using an ipad with 3G in the car as a better alternative to the iphone. -- Suzanne

I agree. No problem with 3G here either. Did notice though when up on the mountain yesterday for business that there was no 3G coverage there, only Edge, boy did I miss that 3G.

I really like the fact that you can buy monthly coverage and not set in a commitment.

I agree. We love our Ipods, Iphones etc. And we are an electronic gadget family but this product doesn't fill a need we haven't already met.
