Ipad as your camera!! Get real!!

I love my iPad... Mine takes great pics too. I wouldn't lug it around Disney. In fact I think using your phone for photos in Wdw or any big event place is just silly. The pics are not as good. Phone is good for a quick Facebook post etc... But for lasting memory photos I want my digital camera.

But why should people care what others do in the big picture of things. I think it's weird people carrying huge backpacks loaded to the breaking point, or girls wearing high heels in the park but the reality is its not my back its not my feet. Get I Ed yourself.

I live here in the OC and go to DL/DCA all of the time. DH & I are seeing more and more people lugging their ipads to the Parks. DH & I each have an ipad and seriously, we like to carry very very very little to the Parks. We each have an iphone and that is it. LESS IS MORE.

I realize this is only a small number of the people using iPads in the parks, but I have seen several visually impaired people using them to take pictures. The big size of the screen is a big plus for them. They can also zoom in on parts of the picture just by stretching that portion of the picture with their fingers.

My DD uses her iPad in the parks because she can't speak and it is her voice. We do sometimes takes pictures with it to use in her communication app or to make picture albums for her because it is easier for her to manipulate them on the iPad than anywhere else.

But, we dont take pictures in the dark or block anyone's view. And, since its an important device to her, we keep her iPad in a very protective case.

That's why when I was shopping for cameras (small and not so small digital) I looked for a viewfinder. If I put it on viewfinder, no one else is inconvenienced by my LCD screens in the dark. I wish more cameras still had them.

Me too. I travel with my dSLR partly because my DH lost our old Cybershot, which was the last generation to have a viewfinder, and I haven't found anything I like well enough to replace it with. The selection of pocket-sized P&S cameras with a viewfinder is pretty much non-existent these days.

Or get an eye-Fi memory card for your camera and wirelessly transfer pictures to your iPad while you are waiting in the next line:

(There are different versions so make sure you get a version compatiblè with their iPad app. They are just now releasing a class10 eye-Fi card, too)

I'm aware of the Eye-Fi, but it isn't compatible with all cameras, where the camera kit accepts any sd card or USB connection.

Why would you want to carry around that huge thing? Are they trying to show off or something?? The pictures on that thing suck anyways!!

While I agree that it is annoying and distracting, I hardly doubt that the majority of people are trying to show off when a lot of people own some sort of tablet.

We would never take our tablet to Disney for pictures much less video. While I still have not seen anyone in the parks with a tablet, I can't imagine being behind someone who is trying to record a show, that is extremely rude. Sometimes people tend to forget they are not the only ones in the park and have total disregard for others peoples enjoyment.

However, I am guessing that some people are doing this because they can easily upload things from their tablet. Would rather use a phone, but if they are international tourists I guess I can understand why they want to use it since the tablets won't charge you for using wifi. While we were int Italy my husband used his tablet to take some pictures and upload them to the internet, something that we would have been insanely charged for had we used our phone.

It's interesting that this topic should come up... I was on another board recently and the topic of iPads being used as cameras in the olympic ceremonies was being discussed. Very interesting points were made, both pros and cons.

I loooove my iPad, and have a protection plan that covers everything but immersion. However, the thought of taking it in the parks makes me cringe. I have dslr too, and I don't even want to carry that, though I have decided I'm going to try. If I need a quick shot to send, I'll use my phone. I'm not going to be tweeting or fb posting pics live anyway. I am always aware of blocking views, and even try to be low and small at events where I am taking pics of my kids at events. Holding the camera is crazy enough, but holding up a iPad...not gonna happen. I hate the screens in the dark! I ont use my LCD screen on my dslr bc it's distracting.


What happened to manners? It makes me sad that people feel like their rights and views are the only important ones.

surely, it's up to the individual, what they use and how they use it?

if they are willing to carry? risk breaking/losing?

i would imagine some cameras and their accessories which people transport around the parks are also worth $$$$$$

as previously mentioned- consideration for others is the key.

Just got home this morning and we were surprised at how many we saw. None of them were distracting to us for pics or videos, etc, but we didn't see any in dark attractions or fireworks, etc.

However, I was so nervous watching some people with them. We were in line for Merida and a woman in front of us had her iPad with NO cover or case on it sitting on the rock wall while her 3 years old daughter jumped around and splashed in the water and mud behind the wall. My first thought was that it's getting all scratched up, and then I was worried it was going to get kicked or stomped on! Then her daughter was carrying it around in one hand...I wanted to grab it to protect it. Only because I know what an investment they are. And yes, I'd be afraid to leave it in a stroller, etc, when on a ride too.

Our family (well, my DD13) owns an iPad. She took it on the trip, but only to keep in touch with friends and teachers while traveling. NOT in the park. But that's because I'm the paranoid one who paid for it!

They are wonderful tools, but I have a tough time imagining the practicality of one for my family in the park.

I agree OP. I thought the same thing when I saw someone using one to take pictures at the MVMCP parade last year. Along with looking crazy while holding it, it's got to be really inconvenient to carry around considering the size and weight. I definitely would never do it.

We saw a lot of this on our recent trip and were perplexed by it. It doesn't bother me, mind you. It just seemed terribly impractical. If someone wants to lug their iPad around the park, more power to 'em. I'll stick with the teeny tiny point and shoot that fits in my pocket.

I'm sure some will agree to disagree but people toting there Ipad around and trying to take several pictures with it instead of a Digital or Camera phone look pretty stupid!!! especially if your using it as a video cam while walking!!

LOL and I just know there is someone out there that holds one up during the duration of It's a Small World!!! My deal of it not being practical is the size and the risk of it getting dropped or accidently hitting a child or an adult as far as that goes. I still think it's a great tool if you wanna do a quick sit down face time with loved with MK in the back ground or maybe a character M&G but to use it as a Point & shoot seems Pointless!! LOL no Pun intended!! Also they take average pictures compared to modern P&p camz!!!

I'm surprised how many people are against other people using their iPads, except when being obstructive! Even more so at all the iPad owners agreeing. Anyone with the newest one would agree it takes some very nice photos, wouldn't replace a solid point & shoot, but nothing to sneeze at either.

I have to agree, super weird. If there is such a word as tacky, using the iPad as a camera is the definition.

I just do not understand this notion at all. Because someone wants to easily be able to share photos from vacation with friends and family very easily it's tacky? There's far more tacky things going on at theme parks.

This, for heaven's sake! WHY on earth does anyone care what someone else chooses to take pics with? Now, I can understand being annoyed with someone filming a show on an iPad (or, honestly, any number of intrusive devices). But if someone is taking pics with it in the park? Does this really affect you? It wouldn't be my choice of camera, but big deal if someone else wants to use it.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Who spends $500+ on an iPad and doesn't own a camera or a phone with a camera? No one. I'm convinced its a perceived status thing. The one good thing about it is that everyone immediately noticed what a huge d-bag the person looks like when they're using it. I like to take pictures of them and then show them to my friends and laugh and laugh and laugh. Ahhh... good times.

Who is anyone to judge what an iPad owner has or doesn't? My mom owns the newest iPad and brought it along to the parks some days to take photos. She owns a nice point and shoot but felt, some days, that with 2 other people in our small party toting cameras and everyone with a smartphone, enough *real* photos were going to be captured. So she opted to take shots on her iPad for easy Facebook uploading.

Bold is mine because I totally agree, not sure just why so many people get so bent out of shape over *other people's choices*. If it's not directly impacting you, which i'm sure, say, someone taking a photo in front of the Tree of Life isn't, let's all get over ourselves.

I do have a "the new iPad", and I disagree. It takes "ok" photos, but nothing to the caliber my point and shoot (and I actually prefer my dSLR, but sometimes its not practical either) or my phone. And the ipad is bulky for snapping pictures. *full disclosure, I'm a photo snob - so maybe that's part of it.

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE my ipad, but for everything but taking photos. FaceTime rocks, the tablet itself is amazing. My kids like the photo booth. But I dont even upload any of the snaps to fb or twitter.

For quick FB/Twitter snaps my droid phone way out performs. My ipad will be with us, but not in the park.

Now, do I care if others want to schlep them to the moon and back? Nope. Just want people to think before they block views of others or shine the bright lights in dark rides, shows, or fireworks. BUT that goes for all tablets, phones, video cameras, dSLRs etc. If people just acted like they werent the only people in the park - or the most important, life would be better for all of us.

I know. And every kid on the planet who's parents forked over $200 for an ipod will have one too. And most parents seem to not explain etiquette to their kids either. oy.

Like I said, not comparable to a point & shoot, but not bad either. As someone else mentioned, they're a useful tool for antsy kids in lines, etc, and that's part of the reason my mom brought it some days, for my youngest sis to play with. If my sis & I weren't there taking photos, too, she'd have brought her camera those days.
