Ipad as your camera!! Get real!!

I haven't seen it in the parks yet, but I sure have seen it at school functions. And not only does it look odd, I found it amazingly rude. People hold those things up over their heads for a better shot, completely blocking the view of someone behind them.

And at concerts! We went to a concert this past summer that specifically disallowed cameras, both still and video, but the audience was a sea of iPhones & iPads being held up in the air to take pics/vids. Absolutely obnoxious to those of us who are there to see the concert, not the screen on a stranger's device!

I have seen it in the parks and I think that really should be included in the "no flash photography" rules. A flash on PotC or SSE is annoying, but the glare of that blasted screen in your face through the ENTIRE ride is far, far worse.

I have to agree, super weird. If there is such a word as tacky, using the iPad as a camera is the definition.

I so totally agree. We were at the Food & Wine Festival last year, sitting on a bench enjoying some time and this woman across the walkway got out her IPod to take a picture of her family. My husband and I wondered why anyone would carrying around something that large for photo taking when a phone would work or *heavens* a real camera that probably had more features for better photos. We've since seen people with them in the parks. I thought technology was supposed to get smaller but it seems it be getting bigger. Even the new Iphone has a bigger screen.

I think you mean iPad...:) an iPod isn't that big. ;)

Yup seen it also at WDW and many places. I think the big thing is many people really don't care about pictures. They don't go lets bring the ipad to take pics with, they take it because they want to play with it when waiting around and such.

I think the biggest reason people take pictures at WDW, more so those who use thier phone or ipad do it because that is what everyone else around them is doing.

Since even phones, don't take the greatest pictures.

I was thinking the same thing, lol!

It would be nice if they had a setting on anything with a screen (some screens on regular cameras are blinding bright) to dim it based on ambient light. If you can turn a switch and put your lens on night time shot, why can't it also put your screen on night time mode at the same time? I mean, the camera knows you are taking a photo in a darkened environment, or you wouldn't be selecting night shot in the first place, right?

For those of you who feel the camera on a phone or ipad/ipod is inadequate, how about the new Nikon and Samsung cameras that are basically the smart part of the smartphone attached to a real camera for a change? They look pretty cool to me . . . .

I wonder if people who primarily take pictures with their iPads don't have a regular camera. Not everyone takes a lot pictures in their day to day lives. I wouldn't want to use the iPad for all my pictures, but I do sometimes use my iPhone (though I like my digital camera's pictures better) in the park. With it set to photo stream, my parents got pictures of the kids having fun every day.

My favorite is when people try to capture fireworks with their cell phone AND their flash goes off. Yeah, like THAT pic is going to turn out.

Last year when I was at the Candlelight Processional, there was a guy recording the whole thing on his ipad. We were nearer the front and he was a couple people over from us but I felt bad for all the people's view he was blocking and it was just really weird to see.

Until ipad's get better quality cameras in them, I will never understand using one as a primary camera. Yeah, I'd love to have memories in some form, but I need to be able to tell what it is without being bothered by the quality.

My brother just got back from Disney and one of the things he said was that he couldn't believe how many people he saw with iPads in the parks. He showed me a picture from the MK parade and there were like 10 people holding up their iPads. He said it was ridiculous and several times they had to move during different things because of iPads blocking their view. My brother loves his igadgets, but said he couldn't understand lugging an iPad around WDW and especially using it for pictures or video, he said phones take way better pictures and videos.

Their choice. I only object when they obstruct the view of the show in question for the people behind them.

Personally though, I prefer to watch rather than record.

This, for heaven's sake! WHY on earth does anyone care what someone else chooses to take pics with? Now, I can understand being annoyed with someone filming a show on an iPad (or, honestly, any number of intrusive devices). But if someone is taking pics with it in the park? Does this really affect you? It wouldn't be my choice of camera, but big deal if someone else wants to use it. :confused3

If someone is holding a big screen over head so as to block the view of others, big issue. We rode the Safari last week with a guy who videoed or took pics with one, it was held at or below his head level, no issue.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Who spends $500+ on an iPad and doesn't own a camera or a phone with a camera? No one. I'm convinced its a perceived status thing. The one good thing about it is that everyone immediately noticed what a huge d-bag the person looks like when they're using it. I like to take pictures of them and then show them to my friends and laugh and laugh and laugh. Ahhh... good times.

LOL, you all will hate me then! I carried my iPad with me almost our whole trip. I also had my regular camera to take pics with. My husband did not go with us and wanted to see pics. I took pics with the iPad and uploaded them to Facebook. It made more sense to me to do that than to lug my laptop thru the airport to upload photos each day. And my phone takes really crappy pics!!

Second this! I totally agree that I don't want to have that thing obstructing my view or shining I my eyes, but other then that I am shocked at how judgey everyone is. I love to take pix with my iPad because there are quite a few very robust apps for doing immediate and fun photo editing. I'm surprised that someone would term it ridiculous if I used my ipad to snap a pic of my daughter in front of the castle, but hey, to each his own.

Agree!! What does it matter what a person takes a picture with. If they are happy with the result, and don't disrupt people what should it matter to me. What makes it seem ridiculous other than its not your personal preference? I don't think carrying a large DSLR around the parks is such a great idea, but that's their choice and if the are happy doing that then great.

And by the way, this thread should be about tablets not iPads. There were all kinds of non-iPad tablets being used for pics last week, and most of them looked just as awkward to me. But given the smiles people had with the pictures they'd taken, well, that's all that matters and they clearly had made memories for themselves. Ultimately isn't that what it's all about?

Why not pick up the iPad Camera Kit?

Take your pictures with your real, better camera and then copy them to your iPad for editing and uploading to Facebook in your room at night. A win-win: no laptop to lug around and you won't look like an idiot taking pictures with a giant pan.

I agree, it bugs me, too! Aren't these people worried that it will get lost or stolen? I'd be paranoid the whole time if I had my iPad with me.

On our last trip this past May, DD and I were in line to see Marie in France. The lady in front of us had a DSLR camera, a phone with a camera and an iPad. She had to take pictures using each device of her daughter with Marie. It took forever. Plus, she wasn't satisfied with the iPad picture, so she had to keep re-taking the photo on her iPad. It was so annoying!

I have seen this since this the past 2 years and do NOT get the point of carrying your ipad around at the parks. I would be scared that I would drop and break it. Digital cameras are much cheaper than an ipad and I bring my phone and camera with me to the park, but leave the ipad at the hotel.

If you have the $500 to drop on an iPad, you can afford a $150 digital camera that contains a bigger, better sensor and a much better lens. You'll take better pictures with a smaller device that slips into your pocket easily and you don't have to worry about cracking a giant glass screen if you happen to drop it.

I do gave a digital that I also carried. If the was a pic I wanted my husband to see, like our daughter with a character, I used my iPad. What's the big deal?

I agree it should not obstruct your view, but if I'm taking a picture of my kid with Minnie, why should that bother you?

Actually I do know people that have an ipad and no real camera (since camera phone does not count). Actually the family I know didn't even have a real camera for years...not till their third kid was born. They aren't into picture taking i guess...they just use camera phone everyonce in a while.

There are really alot of people out there that have no interest in a camera. and most of those pictures on the ipad get uploaded to Facebook right away and they never look at them again.

Because if I'm walking through a park and I accidentally bump into you, causing you to drop and break your iPad, you're much more likely to get upset and have your trip ruined as opposed to having a smaller camera that is much better designed to take and survive a fall. (Not that it would fall anyway as cameras usually have wrist straps.)

Plus the better sensor in your average digital camera means that the first shot is typically perfect, as opposed to the iPad's smaller sensor that is much more susceptible to blurry, grainy images, causing you to have to retake the picture over and over to get it right, holding up the line and annoying everyone in the process.
