I am going to be looking to hire people for a retail sales position. I have hired people before and they always turn out to be losers

I was wondering if my DIS buds can help me come up with some GOOD interview questions to ask to bring out more than the, "what interests you about this company" type things. I want questions that will make the person THINK on the spot, something to show me intelligence and thought as opposed to the "the ad in the paper"

SOOOOOO, any ideas?

What was the last book you read, Why did you read it, and what did you think of it.

Or ask for a definition of Irony

 Um, yeah... and hand them a dictionary to see how resourceful they are. :rotfl:

I live in a college town! And I get ALOT of college kids wanting a job... ok, fine, but bring some brains along with you!

1. why and what interests you about this company?

2. What goals and ambtions do you have?

3. where do you see yourself in 1 year with this company?

4. What attracted you to this postion?

5. what do you feel you can contribute to this company?

6. What do you feel this company can do for you?

7. what do you think you can add to this company that someone could NOT add?

hummm...let me think

A question I had at a job interview once was "What is the project you've worked on that you learned the most? Were you proud of the result?"

I thought that was a little different than the normal 'if you were a vegetable, what vegetable would you be' type questions. Made me think fast, anyway. ;)

LOL, a turnip, cause I have no money... :)

Ask them for 3 of their strengths but then ask them to provide an example of a time when they used that personality trait. I found that the interviewees were usually prepared to give the 3 strenghts but usually stalled at the second part of the question.
Or you could ask them how those traits would help them do the job.

Ask them if they've ever had to make a bad situation into a good one when dealing with customers, and how they resolved this.

What have you done for yourself that you're most proud of?

What have you done for others that you're most proud of?

What is the meaning of life?

I just had two interviews last week. I was asked...

What do I think my stong and weak points are.

What would my last boss say are my strong and weak points are.

the one i always have most trouble with is "what is your biggest weakness"

What is you greatest weakness and how do you overcome it?

Why are you applying for this position?

What do you belive is the greatest assest that you bring to this job?

What do you think is the most important thing needed in a workplace to make it run smoothly?

Just a heads up, I would also make a note of the questions that is asked of you. The last couple of jobs I got was because I asked such good questions about the job I was applying for.

Good luck finding someone,
Tina

Ask them what they know about your company. Or possibly more properly worded "Tell me about <company> name". You'll want to hire someone that's got some familiarity with who you are, they're more likely to be able to keep up the company image you want.

Oh My God I am dreading to go on job interviews now after reading all these questions. Nothing like making me more nervous ;)

Good questions... still haven't gotten THE question, which I don't know what it is, but if it gets posted, lol, I will KNOW, ya know?

Here are a couple:

How do you see this job fitting into your resume for future jobs?

What do you want to gain from this position in regards to your future career?

How do you see yourself helping the company build customers/clients?

1. Do you see people or hear voices?
no, really...

2. What type of friend are you?

3. If someone was asked to tell about you, what would they say?

4. Are you a honest, good person? If so tell me why?

5. List 5 good things about you?

6. Do you care what people think of you?

7. Give me an example of something good you have done for someone?

STILL THINKING!!

oh ya, what type of postion is this for?

Good, good... still not THE question yet.

Ok, let me shed some light on the position, that might help...

Retail, the store that I am going back to is on the BOTTOM of the barrel! I had it top notch once, but quit  mainly because I COULD NOT get people who would work it with me. SOOOO, I am DETERMINED to make this work!!!

Ok, not only just retail, but some salesmanship, interacting with the customer, helping them choose what is best for their needs.

Give them a scenerio of something that could happen during the course of a workday and ask how they would handle it.
