Interval Question

My family is considering DVC. We have three children who are getting older and are getting tired of staying in one room hotels anymore.

My question is using DVC for Interval trades. We plan on going to Disney every other year, but would like to go to different places on the off years, such as Hawaii, Aruba, Europe, etc. Does DVC get members good trades thru Interval?

Any advise would be great, thanks!

No, I would buy a smaller DVC contract for your DVC use only, and a separate II trader for other exchanges. People on this board love Marriott, but that also sells at a premium. There are other resorts that also trade very well at a much more affordable price. However, they do not get the Marriott internal trading priority. (Explanation: All Marriott deposits are reserved for other Marriott owners for roughly the first 21 days.)

We plan to go to WDW every other year, so we have 170 points a year. With banking and borrowing, it works out great. My only problem is that I really want to go every year, so I could use some more points, but can't afford the airfare every year from CA...:(. Well, I can't afford any more points either, yet.

We own another timeshare in Hawaii so that we can go there every year. I think it is difficult to rely on II trades if you aren't flexible with your dates and resorts and unit sizes. If you travel off-season, I think you might be able to get some decent exchanges, but it may be easier to pay cash for a rental instead of relying on a II trade. If you had enough DVC points, you could rent them out to offset the cost of a rental in Hawaii, Aruba, Europe, etc.

There is another thread out there just like this. I wrote on that one how I've not luck trading with II at all. I gave them a 6 week window, 15 resorts and 2 years out and I got nothing.

We belong to II also, and DW does all of our trades. She has great luck trading in the month of Jan. . Alot of II members deposit their weeks then .You have to call every day . II won't keep you on a list . As far as trading DVC into II we're going to have to do some checking on because 160 pts for our 1bdrm a good trade . It's week 4 and rents for $2000 per week. It's in DVC passport collection. If your not familiar with in' and out's of II it's tricky.

Similar to others above, I'd suggest owning fewer DVC points (sufficient for your "Disney every other year" intentions) and then adding a separate timeshare for use through Interval International, RCI and/or other exchange companies.

Reasons:
  • DVC members access Interval International (II) through DVC's Member Services -- not as direct members. Having a personal II membership through my other timeshare -- I can search II inventory online, control my own trades, take advantage of the 59-day flexchange window, and book getaway weeks (rentals not using an exchange).
  • My DVC points are more expensive to own (purchase $) and use (maintenance $) than my non-DVC timeshare.
  • I actually enjoy using my non-DVC resort locations. (Yes, I'm referring to actually staying at my non-DVC properties vs trading them.)
  • DVC restricts outbound exchanges to a subset of "hand picked" II locations. My non-DVC properties are still subject to II's own quality filters -- but certainly have more exchange options than those selected by Disney.
  • Owning a variety of timeshare products allows me greater vacation choices and the ability to book each trip using the most cost-effective tool possible.
While we enjoy owning and using different products -- it may not work for everyone. Best wishes in your research.

Your choice but it would not be a good one. Buy the # of points to use at DVC and look at something else for the non DVC trips. Marriott would fit your needs perfectly it seems but there are other good options like Sunterra.

Thank you all. I have been trying to get information for weeks. a split sounds like the best idea

You might consider an every other year Marriott ownership. My brother did that with a Horizons week. It was less upfront cost and he still gets full II membership and trades. They've traded to stay in numerous places including Orlando and Williamsburg. In fact, I think they haven't even stayed at their home Marriott resort yet. I think their buy-in price was around $10k.

I own several timeshares beside DVC. Thanks to Dean for his advice before I got started on my buying spree.
I suggest you buy a good Marriott trader like Marriott Manor Club Platinum. MMC is cheaper to buy into and cheaper to maintain than almost all the other Marriotts. The best things about the Manor Club are the free golf and colonial style rooms. That being said I have never even been there once. When you own a MMC platinum you will get a bonus week each year for each week you own. I use these bonus weeks, called Accommodation Certificates on II, to book other vacations and almost always in Marriotts. I also suggest you read a lot before buying anything. Buying re-sale is almost always a cheaper and better way to go. Try reading TUG, timeshare users group, www.tug2.net or Timeshare Forums, www.timeshareforums.com for more information. There is a Marriott forum on TIG that I find invaluable. I do not suggest Sunterra, I own a week of Sunterra, but I do recommend Marriotts, World Mark, Hyatts, and Four Seasons for good re-sale purchases. Also I wouldn't be concerned about picking up a re-sale week until you know more about timeshares and exchanging through II. I have purchased some doozies on ebay. I wish I never ever saw those auctions. I should have listened to Dean. I wish I had studied more and bought less. Now I think I have a handle on the whole thing but I am still learning. I just bought a BlueGreen contract because it is a point system like DVC and easy to understand. For now I would suggest only Platinum Marriotts (or Gold in some resorts like Hawaiian Marriotts or Aruba) and to buy them resale

That can work for many. IF you buy retail Marriott tends to charge 60% of the yearly cost though lately they've had a deal where you could get two EOY for half each of the yearly and it doesn't need to be at the same resort. So you could buy two resorts on alternative use years (odd vs even) likely having less need to exchange. Lockoff's can also be a great option as you can get two for one trades in many cases and sometimes 3 for one (1 BR trade, studio trade, bonus week trade).

I thought if you do not buy through Marriott, you do not get the benefits of the trading. I gather this has changed??

Judy, the only thing you don't get by buying a resale Marriott is exchanging your weeks for points. But most people don't think it's worth it anyway.

We saved a lot by buying our Marriott Every Other Year 2 bedroom week resale. And we love being able to split the two bedroom into a studio and one bedroom (we own a lock-off unit) to get a week every year. Actually, Interval offered us a bonus week for the one bedroom side when we deposited it, so we got 3 weeks out of our unit. :cool1:

We really like the combination of DVC points and our Marriott ownership.

We have to agree. I am so glad I added our four Marriott weeks to our portfolio. We have been to a lot of nice places using the Marriott system.
