Just curious... I'm at SSR here right now on renting points. It says Internet access is free to DVC members. Do I count as a DVC member?

Officially NO. However there is a small possiblity that you might not be charged the fee at check out. It depends on how the member booked your room...did they refer to you as a renter or guest. Last year as guests of a co-worker we did not pay the fee to use the internet. Had we rented from them then we might have had to pay. I would suggest you check with the front desk a few days into your trip to see what charges are on your account. If the fee is there then you have the option to not use the internet if you don't want to pay the daily fee. Or you will be able to estimate how much it is going to cost you for the length of your stay.

Yep, we are members and just stayed at OKW for a week. Upon getting our checkout bill we noticed we were charged for internet. A short stop at the front desk and showing our membership card got it taken off.

My "officially no" was for the renter that they are not considered members when renting....never thought now that we are offically members I would have to check to make sure I was getting internet for free. Good to know for our first trip home in March.

As already noted, you are not entitled to it but may or may not be charged. If you are, you will have to pay it as you won't have a DVC member card to get the charges removed.

So, if you use it, assume the charge will be there and be excited if it isn't!

We are OKW members. The last time we were there on an exchange, we were charged for internet at check out, but they waived the fee as a customer courtesy.

As you were not staying on points, you should have been charged as only members staying on points are eligible for these types of perks, it definately was a courtesy that they removed the charge.

If you own your own DVC points, you are a member. If you don't, you are not a member.

We rented but were listed as guests of the DVC member (in all fairness they are friends) and did not pay internet at SSR for 10 days. Hope this is the case for you.

That used to be the normal situation. However, there has been a recent update to the DVC booking software that causes a software glitch. Now it is regularly reported that even DVC Members staying on points are charged for the internet service. Be sure to check your bill, and if you are an owner, go to the front desk and present your membership card to have the billing removed.

This happened to us the last week of October....we had to show our DVC card at the front desk at the BWV to have the charges removed

We had to show our blue DVC membeship card at the desk at AKV back a year and a half ago to have the internet charge removed.

Looks like they are making sure they receive all the revenue that is due them. Can't blame them since it is a DVC Member perk designed for members only.

I feel goofy asking this, but....

I'm the associate, and I'm also the one that booked our big trip. So my name is front and center on the reservations (extreme split stay LOL). My husband, the owner, is of course named on the reservations.

If we have the charge people are mentioning can happen, he can show his card to get it waived, right? Even though I'm the first person on the reservation?

Yes.

We occasionally rent points; always received the free internet perk. We are not DVC members but on our KTTW card it says DVC member when we rent. We last rented 12/09; free internet.

Planning a trip 10/11 on rented points. We won't use the internet if it's not free; don't think internet service is worth an extra fee. If it is free, we'll connect. I'll definitely beware.

We stayed at OKW a month ago as renters and I called to double check. Front desk said "You're DVC so you won't be charged". I said, "Even though we're renting these points from a friend?". They said yes.

All of our key cards said "OKW - DVC" on them.

I would ask when you get there, and note the person's name who told you in case you need to dispute it at the end of your stay.

Generally speaking, you are not ENTITLED to member perks as a renter.

Generally speaking, in the past you'll get member perks as a renter.

Generally speaking, front desk CMs don't have a clue what you are entitled to and what you aren't.

If you don't get charged, great. If you do, don't argue about it. You are not entitled and too often DVC members themselves have seen Disney choose just not to deal with it at all rather than fighting about it. Sometimes that "not dealing with it at all" is "EVERYONE PAYS."

What about renters in studios, do we have access to the free laundry facilities?

Yes, there are free laundry room facilities for all guests staying in studios, no matter if they are members, renters or Disney cash guests. :)
