Internet usage with Xbox One and PS4

hi,
I'm trying to figure out the best BF deal between these two gaming systems for my kids. I was leaning towards getting the Xbox One because the game choices seem more kid friendly, but then I read that the games are downloaded to play, requiring internet. We can only get satellite internet where we live and are limited on download allowance. We can download at night when we have more allowance, but can someone tell me if internet is required when actually playing? Does PS4 require it, also? They wouldn't play across a network, but I'm reading different things about usage requirements for just regular play. Thanks for any info for the video game challenged!

Some games do require you to have a connection in order to play, but all games need updates/patches, sometimes very big ones that could eat through your allotment so keep that in mind.

Do you know if the requirements are roughly equal with the PS4 vs the Xbox?

They will be roughly equal across either platform (Xbox One vs PS4).
