I was just reading a thread on the Community Board asking if anyone carries a concealed weapon at WDW. Some of the responses really shocked me, mainly in how differently Amercians view gun control and gun rights. I know I will never 'get it' but it sure makes me think when 'normal' DIS-going folks startb saying they 'shoot first and ask questions later'. I have to say, I love alot about America (WDW being one of course) and love a few Americans, but I am sure glad to be Canadian!

I've been watching that thread too. Some people are really shocking! Like good Canadians, we'll just sit here on the side-lines, watch carefully and quietly say 'tsk-tsk'.

I'm American (hope you don't mind my opinion) but my immediate response was "Are you kidding me? that's insane, who would think of doing this?"
The last thing we need are more guns anywhere, let alone WDW!:scared1:

When I was in FL last summer there was a story on the news that spanned several days about a WDW employee that wanted to bring his gun to work. Apparently, WDW has a policy that forbids the employees from bringing their guns onto the property. Even though FL laws say they can bring their gun to work. He took the angle that it is his consitutional right (or something like that).

Who needs their gun at work????? and you work at WDW :confused3 Like seriously.

OP...you are right, we Canadians don't/can't 'get it'.

OMG! :scared1: So, someone who works at the Walgreens or McDonalds can bring their gun to work??? Good for Disney for saying no to that one.

The gun thing is something that does still stun me. When we went to Detroit area (12 Oaks in Novi-nice area) shopping in September the Dick's Sporting Goods had a sign on the door saying, 'if you are bringing your firearm into the store for service, please check it at customer service before entering the store.' My dh and I laughed and said, "things you would never see in Canada".

I'm glad our constitution never guaranteed us the right to bear arms. I love the States but that's one of their things that I can't wrap my brain around. My dh used to have to go to Texas a lot for work and, I don't know if this is true but he said, in Texas, it's legal to shoot someone you believe is trespassing on your property. Guess they don't have problems with those Direct Energy people there!!!

Snickerboo, that sign about checking the guns before entering the store DOES exist in Canada!http://www.disboards.com/images/smilies/eek.gif They have a sign like that at the Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World right outside of Calgary. I thought it was a joke the first time I saw it until I realized it was referring to hunting-type weapons being brought in for service!

Yep....I'm not sure what, exactly, the law says but you can carry a gun in some capacity in FL. They did go into detail on the news programs that we watched but I can't remember the details.

I know that there are a few states that have a sort of 'shoot first ask later' type policy and I'm sure that Texas is one of them. My friend used to work in Dallas and was in FL with us last year so we had a lengthy discussion about the news story I had been watching.

I saw that post also.

I find it very scary that people think it is normal to be totin guns ?????????

I guess it comes down to culture. I was truly surprised with the amount of folks that feel the need to carry. I am wondering whether we should drive anymore. I've been brought up with hunting rifles but I don't understand the need for all the military grade weapons. To each their own I guess.:confused3
Just glad that I don't need to worry about this stuff as much as they do.

Ya...I'll bet they do actually worry about having a gun or not.

I'm just amazed that we live so close together and have a huge difference in the way we see things. I'm glad we don't need to live that way up here. It's sad in a way.

Hey guys- this thread came up in "new posts"...but can you point me to that topic? I didn't even know this board existed, but nice to meet you :p

Anyhow, I don't think its a american vs canadian thing- because I know gun control is a huge hot button topic here too! I haven't seen the question, but I have a feeling that the majority of americans feel the same way you do.
It is always just a select few crazies or those who really feel strongly about their opinion who give bad reputations..

Don't see the need to be packin' at WDW.

How do they get their weapons past security?

You realize that you're attracting those Americans to your forum with this thread, right? Just saying...any discussion about guns and americans will bring out ten different opinions, so don't believe that everyone agrees with the OP of that thread. I read the initial post of that thread and said "no way am I going in there - waste of time discussing anything." I rarely post on hot topics like that unless I really get my dander up, lol.

I'm proud to be an American, but I have Canadian ideas about gun control. It's not out of ignorance - many of my family members own/use legal guns safely. I learned to shoot, but other than targets at the carnival, I don't use guns. I don't "get" why so many americans live in fear of being robbed. I also don't "get" why an assault rifle can be used for hunting - I'd think the game would be ruined by all that ammo.

FWIW, the stance on weapons in the US varies from area to area with different situations/cultures presenting different, very strong, opinions and positions. There's almost no way for the groups to really speak to each other rationally because the various political action groups have polarized the topic.

"Us" vs. "Them" always results in a failure for everyone. (Gun Advocates vs. Gun Control Activists)
Hopefully, they can balance each other.

Living near Canada's Wonderland, I first thought the thread was about bringing in concealed food and drinks into the park; boy was I wrong!:rotfl2:

How come everything comes down to us vs them. It really muddles up a discussion. I'm just glad we all have the right to talk about it one way or another.

Because there are over 300 million people in the US and many, many Canadians like to lump "Americans" together because, at least on this forum, they've been to DisneyWorld many times (as shown by their signatures) and they think they are worldly and they've nailed these Americans (over 300 million) in a nutshell.

We like to think that we are smarter, more worldly and a big bag of chips comparatively.

It's embarrassing for some of us, really.

Not throwing all of our neighbours to the south into the same gun boat, but some of them are in that boat.

As for stereotypes.....

The Premier of BC was on the Today show this morning handing out mittens.
Where were his smokes and cup of Timmies?

I'm off to reinforce the igloo. One day I hope Canada gets electricity.

Often Canadians seem to think they know more about the area we live in as opposed to the people living in the country directly north of Windsor

Can you name the countries on this portion of the North American continent?

No googling, GPS calling the georgphy nerd you know or digging out an old atlas.

Scouts Honour.

First of all Ham Ham I know my Canadian Geography. Not my history but definitely my geography.
Also, there are just as many ignorant Canadians (per capita) as Americans. What I can't wrap my head around is that in this day and age we are still allowed to voice these generalized stereotypes of people. Remember, we are constantly fed American t.v., media and not to mention that many Canadians spend their tourism dollars south of the border (myself included). Americans, on the other hand, are not flocking to Canada in droves and who the H. E. double hockey sticks watches Canadian t.v? (As I say this, my 20 year old is watching Flash Point and I'm dying here).

And FURTHER MORE, when are people going to wake up and realize it's all about STARBUCKS and Tim Hortons waters down their coffee?

Maybe I should start another thread or two.
