Interesting situation... School absence... Opinions?

They both would have been counted as an absence at our school. They take and count attendance by each period, not the whole day.

Same at our school.

Really? So if there were, say, seven periods per day and a student were out sick for a week - that's 35 absences? How many are allowed before it's a problem?

No, it would be one absence per class-so each class would have 5 absences. In our school if you have 10 unexcused absences or more per trimester you fail the class. An ongoing medical condition would be excused.

How much is the scholarship?

I have to say, I hate perfect attendance awards!

I think they drive the wrong behavior because some parents will send their child to school sick so they can get an award. That in turn makes more kids sick.

If your child is sick, they should stay home. I think our school got rid of this award since they want people to keep their kids home when they are sick. We got several notices this year about this during the swine flu outbreak (which my DD got).

ITA with this post. I think it is crazy to be giving out awards for perfect attendance. Why reward kids for being at school when they are contagious?

OP, I'm sorry for your situation -- it does seem unfair and I hope it works out in the end.

We don't do the perfect attendance thing. My oldest really wanted it one year and made it all the way to the end of March before he got a stomach virus. On the positive side, at least when our school does hand out the perfect attendance award it is without any fanfare. They make a huge deal out of the academic awards however.

It is a shame that they are trying to deny your cousin the scholarship. A trip to the school nurse shouldn't have been treated as an absence since she would have been in class when attendance should have been taken.

In our school neither would be an absence....because she was there for instruction. Leaving a few minutes early for lunch and coming back would not be looked at any more differently than a dr or counselors appointment. And the Nurses visit was the fault of her 1st period teacher- she should have been marked present, and issued a pass for the nurse. The nurse should have a record of her visit and return to class(easy one to prove). We also take attendance per period and if a student went to the nurse the 2nd period teacher can see that by the status button being yellow(green for present, red for absent, yellow for other area with permission)

I hope your cousin gets this worked out! It doesn't seem quite fair to count those type of occurances as an absence.

BTW--I concur with the poster who mentioned that your cousin's daughter is your first cousin, once removed. I am the only person in my family who can keep this all straight:goodvibes and I am always called on to clarify relationships.;)

At the high school I went to, you just had to be present for 5 periods of the day to be eligible for perfect attendance. So kids would come in by 3rd period if they weren't feeling well, or leave after the 5th.

Now for grading purposes, they looked at each class individually. So it was possible to have more absences in one class than another. But as long as you were in school for 5 periods, the school considered you to have been there for the day for the purposes of the award.
