So DH and I were planning to travel to DL this October, staying at the Grand Californian on points. However, last week we happened to find out about a new condo that seems amazing. We've been renters for 5 years and are looking to make our first primary residence purchase. We live in MA; the prices are crazy here, but this condo falls within the range we'd like. The condo is too good to pass up, but we would certainly have to cancel the October trip and would most likely be skipping next year's trip, too.

So, my question is, can DVC members rent points that have been converted into Reservation Points? For example, could I offer someone a week at GCH? I realize that the Reservation Points would not be very useful for WDW, but we're thinking that at Disneyland they could be useful and could possibly save the renters some money.

Of course, we've never rented our points before, either.

Any thoughts? Many thanks!

Buy the condo. Ask MS for sure, but I believe you can rent your reservation points just like your other points. You would need to post in the rental that they are reservation points. I don't know if you could transfer that reservation.

You can rent reservation points, but renting them won't remove the restrictions on their use. So, you could make reservations and rent them at the non-DVC properties, and the various collections...but not at a DVC resort.

As long as MS will let you change the name on the reservation, you'll be able to rent the reservation. Just post it on the Rent/Trade Board and see what happens!

Congrats on the condo! :)

Yes you can. We rented points from someone who was planning to stay at the GC as well. They cancelled the reservation and put an 8 day reservation in for us at AKL. They took a hugh hit in points and we got a really great deal for those 8 days. You may not be able to get the full value of your points but you should be able to get something for them. I almost felt bad for the deal that I got, but heck, they didn't have to accept my offer :).

Wow-- thanks everyone! We'll find out this week if we can qualify for the mortgage we need (crossing fingers). At everyone's suggestion, I'll check with MS and then take it from there.

I love this community!

You probably won't get $10 per point--it might be better to look at Rack Rates and discount by some flat percent.

I think you'll have an easier time renting reservation points than selling the reservation. Lots of people rent within 60 days of travel (you are limited to only booking 60 days out and must be for DVC properties only). Shoot for $9 per point and you should be ok.

Edit: Sorry I was think of holding points. Not really sure what the restrictions are on reservation points.

I think you'd be better off trying to sell it as a package such as listing many of the resorts and maybe how many days they might be able to stay for the number of points you have tied up over there. I would steer clear of mentioning a points number and try to provide a dollar amount for so many nights. There's no way you are going to get any where near $10 per point so just be ready to take the hit. Just for an example we got something like 360 points (AKL) for the 8 nights at about $1.2K. Or you can always setup a reservation and then try and sell on E-Bay. Also be prepared to answer the same question over and over from someone wanting you setup a reservation at a DVC resort and not understanding that the points are over in the Concerige Collection area. Good luck.

Reservation Points are points that were originally committed to a non-DVC resort. Once points are used to book on DCL, DL resort, etc., they immediately become Reservation Points. Even if the non-DVC stay is cancelled well within established guidelines, the points remain in Reservation status and cannot be used at a DVC resort.
