What interesting facts have you learned about the ship?

Here are few of the things I learned on a recent Magic cruise:

!. $250,000 is spent weekly on food. A restaurant would normally charge 4 times what is spent on food.

2. Each week $30,000 worth of food is thrown away.

3. All the money they made from recycling (please use the proper trash bins!) last year (about $10,000) went directly back to the crew members for things such as parties.

Anyone want to add to the list?

Some of the things I've picked up along the way:

When you're driving out of the terminal after the cruise, take a look at the ship's port side. There will be a fuel barge alongside pumping diesel into the ship. One of the DCL bus drivers told me that it takes several hours to re-fuel the ship, and that when finished, the barge will be sitting six feet higher in the water. I can't remember how much fuel is exchanged, but that's a lot of fuel.....

The ship cost almost half a billion dollars to build. For all that, the way they monitor whether or not the stabilizers (large "wings" which stick out of the hull to reduce movement) are in the water is with a plastic sign on the main console on the bridge. One side says "FINS IN," the other says "FINS OUT." I'm told it's best to make sure they're in before trying to dock the ship.

The front of the Magic has 100 more sailing miles on it than the back half as the front had to be sailed to the back at a different ship building site.

We've been on 3 DCL cruises with DD who we thought wasn't able to keep a secret. Well, tonight, we sat down to watch the Travel Channel show on Disney, and she got so mad when they showed the secret hall for the kids--she said she and all the other kids had kept it secret, and here it was shown on national TV. I had no idea the secret hall existed.

We were surpirsed about that "secret hall" also - Michael said he was "sworn to secrecy"! Ohh yeah?!

I did find out that the leftover food was ground up and "spit" out the AFT for the fishies to munch on!! Often whales and dolphins can be seen after they release the food leftovers!!

Oh my!!
We've known about that hall for ages, and I never even realized it was a secret!
I have lots of ship secrets too but I'll never tell. ;)

Rae - after the whales and dolphins RELEASE the food leftovers or after the ship RELEASES the food leftovers?...

There might be a few out in cyberspace who remember the first time we started the Whale discussion, BD!!!!
Tread lightly!!

HAHAHAHAHAH!

The ship can make 500,000 gallons of fresh water from sea water each day.

I have a few more fun facts about The Disney Wonder. The tonnage of the boat is 83,338 tons or 90 million lbs. and the height is 964 ft. - the height of the Eiffel Tower is 986 ft. The anchor weighs 28,200 lbs, the same weight of three elephants. There are 5,390 pillows on board. 2,600 cups of coffee are served every day as well as over 5,000 eggs served every morning. The 1,357 miles of cable on board would be enough to run an extention cord between Texas and michigan. The 20,000 gallons of paint it takes to cover the Wonder could paint 2,000 average American homes!

Carolyn,
You have been reading the pictures on the ship. I love to read them as well.

The most depressing fact: The ships sail every week without the majority of us on board. :(

They pump in 250,000 gallons of fuel oil into the Magic every Saturday for the seven day cruises.

Can you imagine the size of their Shell bill every month? LOL

This is a little off topic, but one personal tidbit we found out was that we stayed in the same room as former President Jimmy Carter and his family. :)

Only ships in the industry with yellow life boats, orange is standard... but Mickey does not wear orange.

2,600 cups of coffee are served every day

Ah but how many of those are actually drank after the first sip? :)
Cheers,
Grumbo
