Saw this article and thought that this would be a really cool update to HM.

Some of the article is speculation at this point as Disney has not actually said what they are doing, but it is the most likely explanation as to what is going on...the digital projections currently in place of the original hitchhiking ghosts effect are temporary, allowing them to work on it without shutting down the attraction again.
