Does anyone know what other costs I will incur if I pay the £99 for car insurance with the above.

We go to Florida in the summer and I have a fly drive with Virgin, I want the car but not their insurance, will a policy with the above cover me and what else will I have to pay?

Anyone had anything similar with them?

We used this in 2004 and from what I can remember the "extras" we had to pay were some sort of tax which came to about $250 on our 21 day rental. It worked out way cheaper than taking the policy which came with the "free" car

We paid for insurance with insurance4carhire last year.
I can't remember exactly but seem to remember extras being around £70 for 17 days
We rented from Dollar and had no problems with the insurance.
Just say no if they try to talk you into any 'top up' at the desk - they're not necessary.

Does anyone know what the 'extras' are? We have flydrive booked with BA, that includes a car - we were going to buy the insurance4carhire insurance, but I'm thinking it could almost work out cheaper for us to rent from scratch - we normally pay £300 or so for a 7 seater. If the extras are going to be that much I would sooner get our own car (the added plus would be that there is a Dollar desk in Tampa airport - BA use Alamo, and this is quite a ride to an offsite location - I hate those shuttle bus rides!).

Just dragged out the Dollar receipt from last year (absolutely no idea why I still have it! )
We had the car an extra day as our flight was delayed ($30), pre-paid fuel was $32.38, state tax $6.15, vehicle license fee $7.99, CONFEERECCHG (?) $19.80, Fl surcharge $34.51, Tax rec fee $12.62.
If you can make any sense of that lot $113.45 was their estimated charge - I think it was actually cheaper when we paid. That was for 19 days in the end.
We had to leave a credit card imprint for $1500 but that figure was never actually charged as it never appeared on a visa statement
And, yes, we used insurance4carhire and found them great .
A little confusing maybe but hope it helps

Hi,
On our trip last November our "charges" were a total of $46.76 for 12 days for a Chrysler Neon car. We always decline the pre-paid fuel (too expensive) and just make sure we return the car full. I checked my available credit online and at no time did it reduce by $1500.

If you are going to use this insurance, where is the best place to hire a car, is it direct with the company, only Dollar.co.uk only seems to give prices including all the insurance.

I think that you need to book direct from the US rental site but I might be wrong

We had our 'free' Dollar car as part of a Virgin holiday so I just bought the ins afterwards

Sorry to be thick, but now I am confused. I have just looked on Virgins website for fly drive for 16 nights and they have charged us £100 for 16 nights with no insurance cover for a 7 seater.

So if I paid that £100 to Virgin and then the £99.00 to insurance4car hire this would all that requires to be paid or will there be further charges when we arrive. Will car rental companies allow us to only use this insurance?

I am a little confused sorry. Its only because it is around £200 cheaper doing it this way. Which is why I am surely there is a catch hidden charges that we need to pay once we arrive

What about if the car is stolen will the car be covered?

You would need to pay taxes etc which last year, cost us around £55 for 19 days I think

We had the 'free' Dollar car and used ins4carhire .

There's a line on their home page saying that the policy isn't suitable for flydrives but, when I called them, they said that this was mainly due to the fact that some hire companies were trying to hardsell at the check in desk so, if you're worried you might not be able to,'
stand your ground', you might be best booking a car package

I also called Virgin to check about the insurance and they said it would be ok (and it was )

Apparently many car hire firms, offering 'free' cars, make their money out of selling their inflated insurance so they prefer you to buy from them

This year we're booking a car rental package as we don't have a 'free' car

Angel - the £100 could be the extra charge Virgin make if you go over the standard number of nights they give you the vehicle "free" for which is either 7 or 14 days, I forget which
