You are going during hurricane season. Unless the amount of $ you are spending on your cruise and related travel arrangements is of no significance to you, you NEED travel insurance. Warren Buffett in a Cat. 5 might decide to forego the expense, as mere pocket change for him, but perhaps you are somewhere else along the economic continuum. This response from someone booked, with insurance through my TA that is from a different carrier than the DCL policy, for a hurricane season cruise in '06.
Especially since you are booked during Hurricane season! We were on the one day shortened Hurricane Jeanne cruise, and ended up renting a car, and driving home...(see where that is) and thank god for insurance. It is a small amount considering what you spend to cruise..If you search for reports from travellers during last September, you will most likely agree.HTH
If you are OK with the possibility of losing the full price of the cruise, you can get along without it.
What the insurance companies scare you with is medical costs, in particular the cost of evacuation to US in case of life-threatening illness. I don't know the actual facts on this. It seems reasonable that helicopter evacuation from somewhere in the Caribbean might well cost several thousand dollars, but if this only happens to one passenger in a million, why pay big money for coverage?
I have purchased insurance for both of our cruises, but not from Disney as it is overpriced. During hurricane season it may make sense to get it from Disney as you may be treated better. Otherwise get it from Travelex or other insurer at www.insuremytrip.com.
Read your coverage carefully before buying! It is possible that hurricanes are not covered, or if they are the coverage may be redundant. During last year's hurricanes, cruise lines were so generous to passengers impacted by the hurricanes, it's not clear that insurance helped.
We saied on the Wonder in Sept '03, and didn't get the insurance. Fortunately, we had smooth sailing and beautiful weather.
Last year, however, we did not cruise, and we saw just how lucky we were. The nightmare stories we read here about those who cruised last September scared us into purchasing insurance for our upcoming September cruise. We can deal with changes in itinerary, but we want to be covered financially in case of missed flights, etc. We can't afford to take chances with all of the money we have invested in our vacation.
Our 10/2006 cruise on the Magic for two adults and one child had $257 in DCL vacation protection costs. Changing that coverage to a policy through Access America (I think the www.insuremytrip.com site gets you there) was $92 plus a $5 handling fee, for $97 total, or a savings of $160.
I checked out the quotes and tell you the truth i have no idea what ins. package to purchase, i am thinking about booking the dec. 31 cruise . any suggestions on which ins. package ?
