This may have been covered before but is a cautionary tale.

We booked a Cruise using a combination of points and cash and opted not to buy travel insurance from Disney.

A few months later we decided to buy it and went to an American Express company Global Travel Shield. Fast forward and we need to cancel. We sent in all the documents and got the checks, less the amount we paid for with points. This company and I guess many other only reimburse for what you paid in cash. I was told by Disney that the insurance provider they use only pays 5 per point .

Live and learn.

That's why I never buy travel insurance for my DVC vacations. I can just book another vacation with the points.
And why it's better to book with cash directly because you can cancel up to 60-75 days before travel (depending on the cruise company) for a full refund even if you paid it full. As well as that those points would still be reservation points and expire the end of the UY.

I wonder if you can still use part of the points for something else, I realize it depends on how close to the cruise that it was cancelled.
