last month I hit a pile of ice and crunched my bumper. I really need to get it fixed, and am wondering if anyone knows if I will end up with points because of it? trying to figure out if I am best off just getting it done myself or going thru the insurance.

thanks!

It all depends on how much it costs. If it is under your state threshold for the payout (so the damage minus your deductible) then it isn't chargeable. If it is even more then a dollar over that threshold then you will get charged points. Get an estimate done to see how much it will cost then call your agent to see what your threshold is ($1000-1500 usually) and see how much your surcharge over time will cost you. Once you do the math you can see which is the better route to take.

You only gets "points" through your motor vehicle administration--which are then available for your insurance company to see. Since you did not commit a traffic violation for your accident, no points were assessed.

Now, if you submit a claim for this damage, your insurance will most likely increase. My friend has USAA auto insurance. She lightly tapped a pole in our parking garage and got a dent/scrape on her rear quarter panel. Damage was $1200. She submitted a claim for it and they then raised her rates during the next renewal for submitting a claim. Only submit for a claim if the damage is very expensive.

Driving points and insurance points are different things. The severity of an accident/violation earns you points on your insurance premiums too. In MN a speeding ticket is 2 insurance points where as a DWI is 9 points, an accident will be either 4 or 6 points usually. This is how they determine how much they will raise your rates. We don't have a point system for your driver's license in MN at all.
