We don't purchase the insurance. We book land through Disney and airfare through the airlines. As I understand it only land would be covered on the insurance if we cancled. Seeing the the fee for canceling under 6 days is $200 I don't think the insurance is needed. Once down to that last week it is very unlikely that we would cancel. Sure we would cancel if one of us was very ill but even then I consider the acutal loss to be small.
During our March 2006 trip to
Disneyland we did purchase the insurance. Their policy is different. If canceled under 22 days (I think might be less) you owe 50% of the package price. On that trip we had booked air fare so it was covered by insurance. Our flight was canceled the day of the trip which caused a 10 1/2 hour delay of our trip. We lost basically the entire day in DL. So I tried to claim it on the insurance and was told "Sorry the for trip delay to be covered it must be 12 or more hours". Needless to say I was upset and felt the insurance was worthless.
As far as hurricane season goes, if you read the
trip insurance coverage they only cover weather claims if
"Inclement Weather or the occurrence of a Natural Disaster that causes complete cessation of travel services at the point departure and/or Destination".
Last time there were hurricane problems , as I understand it, once the State of Florida came out and asked people not to travel to FL when a hurricane was coming, hotels and airlines would allow people to reschedule their trips without penalties. I'm hoping for the same if it happens this year.
I suggest that before you add insurance (if booking allows you to add it later at no additional charge besides the cost of the insurance) that you request a brochure and read it fully. Then you can decided what is best for you.
