A friend has recently had to claim under her home insurance for a broken laptop, She is a natural born worrier and is now convinced they are going to deny her claim ( i can't see any reason they would!!) Just out of interest what would happen if they did? would she then be blacklisted or refused insurance in the future?? she has never claimed on her home insurance before??I'm sure this isn't a fraudulent claim as she is not that sort of person just a massive worrier!!

Any advice would be great as i hate to see her all wound up like this!!

Thanks Alex

I'm presuming she is claiming for the laptop being broken through accidental damage and as long as she is insured for this there should be no problem. The insurance company would have to provide a reason for not paying out and then your friend could take the case to the insurance ombudsman who would decide the outcome of the claim. It's unlikely that she would be refused cover from another insurer as long as she informs that company of the previous dispute should she lose the case.

We have had to claim once before, the insurance company sent someone out to have a look and we were sent a cheque out the next day. I'm sure she will be ok.

If the company refused to pay out it would only be if they thought it wasn't a genuine claim. Even if that happened, there is no reason why your friend would be refused insurance in the future - insurance companies only ask if you've had any claims in the last 3-5 years. If they don't pay out, your friend would be justified in saying 'No' to that question anyway. They also ask if you've been refused insurance before but not if you've had a claim refused - loads of people make claims that are not paid for whatever reason be it that they're not covered or the claim is for more than they're covered for a specific item. If your friend has accidental damage cover and her laptop is covered either as a specified item or the value is within the single items limit, her claim should be fine.

thanks guys, she has got the assessor coming round on wed, so fingers crossed for her!!

thanks alex
