Inspired by washer thread, why buy sets?

I'm intrigued that so many of you seem to replace both your washer AND your dryer when one of them breaks. Why? They aren't decorative items. I assume most of us have them in a laundry room, closet or basement where only the family even sees them. I fully admit to being cheap, but I would never do this.

I didn't replace both of mine when my washer broke. Then a couple years later when my dryer broke I just replaced my dryer. The laundry room is between the kitchen and the garage so it's not a room that guests normally go in and if they do they see the litterbox, anyway. And if they don't like my non-matching w/d, they won't like the fingerprints on the walls, either! And if they don't like all of the above, they probably won't want to come back, anyway. In general, I try to have friends who have it less together than I have it so that it appears that I am clean and tidy...

I just replaced my dryer...and I wondered if I should buy a new set or not.

I did some research and generally (from what I could tell) dryers last about 10-12 years and washers last 12-14 years.

There is some logic, then, in replacing both at once. First is that chances are that if one goes bad, the other isn't far behind...and in two years or so, you won't get a match to the one you "just" bought.

I have to admit, even though you can't always see the washer and dryer, it did look more "uniform" when they matched...

But, ultimately I'm "frugal" too

For me, Everyone sees my Washer and dryer when they use the 1/2 bathroom. We live in a townhouse and thhat is they way the house is set up.

Plus ours were 11 years old and I upgraded to a front loader, dryer (stove too) died on me.

I had to a couple of years ago because I bought a bigger washer and my dryer was too small to hold a load of laundry. Since I didn't want to have to dry 2 loads to every one I washed, I bought a new dryer too so they would both hold the same amount of clothes.

You are so right.. My dryer died a couple months ago - it came with the house when I moved in - UGLY yellowish color, so when I replaced it, I replaced the washer so they are matching. I figured they were about the same age - it was only a matter of time...

I bought them from the APPLIANCE DIRECT guy that so many of you know and love from his TV commercials - can't beat their prices or delivery!

they do look great when they match, but mine will never break at the same time, so I feel to guilty replacing something that isn't broken.

Maybe one day I will splurge and just give them away to one of my kids when they need a first set and get the set I would love to have!

You are more than welcome to adopt it! The only thing is, you can't share it with your friends (even thoughI might have mentioned it to mine since they can look at my house since they can tell it's not always true...) and too many people can adopt it from one area or it won't work right!

I have a Kenmore washer and dryer...one that is 6 years old and the other that is 3. The 3 year old washer might have to be replaced because it's a lemon (deserving of it's own thread ) but will we replace the dryer with it?.......nope.

I know that I'm the oddball here but I actually bought a new washer and dryer recently and they don't match. No one will have reason to go into my laundry room so I knew I could get by and besides, I don't really care.

My dryer is one of those Maytag Neptune drying centers that I got at a great price at an auction. However, I had heard less than favorable things about the matching washer so I ended up getting a different brand (Bosch) that was greatly reduced due to a dent on the side. The dent faces the wall so it's a non-issue.

The last time my washer and dryer matched was when I had to buy a "set" with my very first house. Since then, they have never "broken" together and they don't match except for the fact that they are both white.

If I ever had to get both at one time, I'm not sure I would care about them being the same brand or anything. The companies that make the best washers don't necessarily make the better dryers and vice versa. I will buy what I want in each appliance.

I have had four washers to my one dryer. The third washer was a front loader and the dryer wasn't big enough to accommodate the entire load as efficiently as it should have. After all, it was old, so when I bought the new front loading Maytag, I got the set. The dryer is so much more efficient than my previous one.

my dryer just died ....well it was still going but it wasn't drying very well (sensor didn't work so I had to turn it back on to finish the drying) and it started going bang bang bang while it dried So we bought a matching pair for 2 reasons ....my washer was almost 20 years old (Kenmore) and was looking a little worn and knew it was a matter of time AND my laundry room being only 6'x9', we had to pull out the washer in order to get the dryer out, so it made sense to us


about the dryer.... at first my DH said.... we can live with the bang bang banging..... at least its still drying so I made sure to turn it on just as he was coming in from work each night and dried for hours

it wasn't long before "HE" said "lets go buy a dryer

it took less than 2 weeks

it was actually a Saturday night and my DH suddenly says ... "thats it, lets buy a dryer"
well I had to remind him that he was going to be starting his officer's duty week the next day ... he is a firefighter as a side job ... anyway....when he is on officer's duty week (on call) he cannot leave town except for his regular job soooo.....
I said we'll have to wait a week and he said "no we have an hour before the stores close and we flew out the door
