If it looks like a direct hit and you think you think the lights will be out for a while, don't leave meat in your frig or you'll get a nasty surprise when you get home. Have a plan for your pets too--don't leave them.

I fill my washing machine up with water too. That way if I don't lose power, I just throw in clothes and detergent and don't "waste" the water.

I just read in the paper this morning that Publix is planning to install backup generators in it's So. FL stores. By July they expect to have a third of the stores done. I hope one near me has a generator. That will prevent them from losing all the frozen and refrigerated stuff. After the last storms it took weeks to get the stores fully restocked again.

I wish I could talk DH into buying a generator, at least to run our fridge and some lights.

Another good tip is to clean out your fridge before a hurricane comes.
