Ok. I seriously need to walk away from this thread. I wore this exact dress to a Homecoming Dance except that it was all one color. Ivory. That would have been circa 1979??
OMG, mine was VERY similar to this one (1986)-- but it was all white (don't ask -my older sister had an all white prom gown too).... Gunne Sax. I don't have mine anymore though -- my mom got rid of all of our dresses when she moved 12 years ago.
I graduated in 1990. All my HS dresses had a butt bow. I was very thin in HS (size 0 - no hips, etc.) so I always had to have the butt bow taken in. Otherwise, from the front it looked like my butt had wings.
I had the classic 80's prom dress. It was lavender, off the shoulder, big southern belle style dress. My date had the white tails with the cumber bun and tie to match my dress. Wowzy!

I am laughing at this thread because I had to FIND a 1980's prom dress for DD who was in a play last weekend. They changed the ending 2 weeks before the play opened. Do you have any idea how hard it was to find a 1980's prom dress in a size other than 0-12??? I needed a larger size, finally found it but it was close. She was the only cast member to have original MOM jeans, said while I pat myself on the shoulder lol! I told DH saving some of this stuff would come in handy one day.
Very much like the dress my bridesmaids wore too, except it was teal, had a lace bodice and a butt bow.
Same neckline, same sleeves, same dropped-V waist (which, BTW, looked great on every one of my bridesmaids even though I had all different shapes, & colors), same poufy skirt.
My proms were in 1978 & 1979 when "Qiana" (think shiny polyester...oh so fabulous!!) was in vogue.
It's a lot like my bridesmaid dresses, except mine had long sleeves that weren't so poofy and it was floor length. It was a sort of tea rose color.
In my defense, I was very limited in what I could choose. Two of my bridesmaids were quite plus size and back then, you could hardly find anything bigger than a 14 or 16. And those were really more like a 12 or 14. So we had very little to choose from. I wasn't going to pick girls to fit in pretty dresses, I was going to find dresses to fit the girls who mattered most to me. And that style was pretty simple, did flatter with the V waist, and didn't make the busty girls look like they'd had massive implants.
I didn't kid myself that they'd every wear them again, so I got fairly inexpensive ones. I had no idea they were still wearing that style well into the 90s.
