Do you pronounce the "et" or change it to a short a sound? Maybe you say it some other way. Is it a regional thing?

When I was reading the other thread, I noticed I change it to the short a sound and say "pock-a-book." I don't think I know anyone who says it "pock-et-book."

I live in New Jersey (originally from Western PA) and have always pronounced the "et".

I usually call it a purse, but when saying "pocketbook," I pronounce the "et." :)

ETA: I've lived in Florida all my life.

California here - we say pock - et - book. Where do they say pock-a-book exactly? I've never heard it said that way.

I was born in Philly and raised in the surrounding suburbs. I really don't know anyone who actually pronounces the "et". Just another one of those weird things.

Its Pock -a- book. I thought it was only a PA thing.

Kansas here, I say pock-et-book. I've never heard anyone making it an a sound. I also rarely hear anyone call it pocketbook unless they are over 80. :goodvibes We call them purses.

Even tho I don't call my purse a pocketbook, that is exactly how I say. I have never heard anyone say pock-a-book :scared1:

Glad I am not the only one ;) I have a friend that lives in upstate NY and she calls it a pocketbook, and pronounces the "et" not the "a".

I was raised in Boston and my mum always said pock-a-book.

We say pock-etbook. I never heard it pronounced any other way.

We seldom say pocketbook in Oklahoma...usually purse. But if I say it I say pock-et-book. Never heard it the other way.

As soon as I saw the title of your thread, I said to myself "She's either from Philly or South Jersey!" I lived in South Jersey for 15 years (across from the Philly airport). People in that area always seem to shorten words - hence "pockabook" instead of "pocketbook". :confused3

:confused3 What's a pocketbook? Is it what we call a wallet? a handbag? a diary?

Pock-a-book. My mother tells me that when I was really young I used to say pa-bu.

My mom pronounces it pock-a-book and she was from New Jersey most of her life. I just say purse ;)
