December 8th marks two tragic events in rock-n-roll history. First in 1980, former Beatle and pacifist John Lennon was shot and killed outside his NYC apartment at the Dalota building in front of his wife, Yoko Ono by a crazed "fan".

In 2004, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, co-founder of metal band Pantera was shot and killed while performing onstage with his band Damageplan, which also included his brother Vinnie. Three others were killed or critically injured before the deranged gunman turned the weapon on himself.

What would posess someone to randomly take the life of someone they had never even met...

Today is my birthday and I have always said it is a significant day in rock-n-roll history.

In addition to the two facts you mentioned, the Grateful Dead officially announced their breakup on December 8th after the death of Jerry Garcia.

Also, Jim Morrison of the Doors was born on December 8th.
