The thread on IVF started me wondering. I had artificial insemination from a donor to become pregnant with DD, Kendall. I was 36, single and wanted a child very badly. It took a lot of talking to get the doctor to agree to the procedure. At that time, single women didn't intentionally get pregnant. I had to speak to a counselor prior to the procedure. I also had to have my oncologist to assure the doctor that it was okay for me to get pregnant. I'd had breast cancer when I was 32.

It was scary. We don't know anything about Kendall's dad other than he was a resident at the hospital where my doctor worked when he donated. I had to sign a paper indicating that I would never try to find out anything about him. I can't tell you how very grateful I am to this wonderful man who was willing to give someone else a chance to have a child. I am so blessed. I couldn't ask for a better child.

I've been considering sending a letter to my doctor with a picture of Kendall. I haven't seen him since I got pregnant. I'd like him to know what a wonderful thing he did by helping me. Do you think it would be inappropriate to send something to him?

Are there any other single moms out there who had artificial insemination? Just very curious.

I have a dear friend who was AI and is a single mom. She has a couple samples of sperm left over, so she will likely try for another child. If I don't find the right man, I would definitely consider this option - I just turned 33 so I think (I hope ;) ) I have a little time left.

I see nothing wrong with sending a letter to your doctor...as long as you are not hoping that he will share it with the donor.

Btw, your daughter is absolutely beautiful!!!

My neighbor just had a baby boy as a result of artifical insemination. She and her same sex partner obviously could not have a baby the conventional way, so they opted for a sperm donor. Little Christopher is just as precious as he can be, too! :)

I think if I were a single woman approaching my 40's I too would have considered that option, as well as adopting from China where I know its common for single women in their late 30's to adopt. Although having had children with my husband around to take up the slack, I realize just how tough single moms have it. My hat is off to you! And I agree with Tiger Bear, your daughter is so pretty! I also love the name Kendall. :)
