How long have you kept your kids out of school for a vacation? We are planning to go this December and DS will be out of school for 5 days. I am considering pulling him out an extra 1/2 day. DH was a little concerned. How long have you taken your kids out?

We took DD out last year for 7 days to go to WDW. She was in 2nd grade. The teacher had no problem with us taken her out. She sent some work with us, and she had to write in a journal each day. When we got back each day the teacher gave her a little xtra homework to make up what she missed.

We planned our trip around MLK weekend. They only had to miss 3 and 1/2 days of school, and we were there for 7 days! My 4th grader had a lot more homework than my 2nd grader, but we fit a little in each day and got most of it done.

We took dd out for 4 days (it was President's Day week so she already had one day off) and I don't think I'll ever do it again. The amount of homework she had and the amount of time we spent on it was amazing....and they expected it turned in either the day she got back or the day after.

Right now I only have one child in school, Kindergarten actually and we took him out for one week in December and I honestly wouldn't do it again! If I had to do it, meaning DH could only get certain weeks off a year, then I would, but since our vacations are flexible, we are going to use school vacations and summers from now on...

While Andrew had no problem catching back up with letters and numbers, I felt incredibly guilty for taking him out of school, since he missed a field trip and a Music Concert that he was to sing in! I just felt it wasn't fair to him and he really likes school now, so we are waiting until August this year to take another vacation! :)

Seriously though, like I said, if I *had* to take him out to be with family or whatever, I would do it! :)

Our school district will allow up to 10 school days, once a year.

We took DS8 (2nd grade) out of school last December for the 1/2 day on Friday and entire week after. It was the last full week of school before winter break - so he really had 3 weeks off of school. The teacher was really good about his work, she gave him all of the homework sheets they were going to have that week. She did assign writing in his journal everyday while on vacation and gave him 5 extra books to read. I think Disney World is a great family vacation and an educational experience as well. As long as his grades are where they should be, I don't have a problem taking him out for a vacation.

Hello, you, BeattyFamily, and I are all going at the same time in December. Last year, I took my son out for WDW for six school days. For our trip starting at Thanksgiving, he will be on break as it is a year-round school.

When DD was little, we pulled her out for 4 days at a time. Since she's been in the higher grades, we go in summer. Once they get into the harder material in school, missing time is almost like punishment for the kid - they get terribly behind and struggle to catch up. I'd say for young kids, no problem - after about 5th grade - go during a vacation period.
