What languages do you know? Are you fluent in them, or just know a few phrases here and there? And are there any you'd like to learn?

I only know English fluently, but I knew just enough German to get by as a visitor in Switzerland this trip. I'd like to brush up on my German a bit more, too.

And after visiting the Italian portion of Switzerland and actually hearing Italian spoken, I'd kinda like to learn some Italian as well.

Not high on my list of *desired* languages to learn but probably the most useful would be Spanish.

English of course...use to be fluent in German...would have to brush up if I went back.

English and Pig Latin.

But I would love to learn ASL and be able to do it fluently. I have always dabbled in it, but that's it.

English (read/speak)
Indonesian (read/speak)
French (rusty)

French and spanish. I speak them..but I find that I ama 5 year old in both. I can start out talking in one language and if I can think of the word in one..I'll say it in another.

So, I understand both, speak them well, and read the just ok.

I can read Spanish pretty well, but I can't speak it worth a darn.

I dapple in a few. I learned enough in Japan to do basic communication.

I taught myself Spanish, so I could communicate on my trip to Mexico. I didn't really need it that much because so many people spoke English.:D

Hiya,

I've always loved languages so....

German - Like to think I'm fluent, 7yrs of learning but haven't studied for 4 yrs so its rusty - but I can get by pretty well :)

French - Basic speaking and reading (2yrs of study)

Japanese - Basic speaking, mainly just some choice sentences, but I am taking it back up in September and hope to do some qualifications.

Cantonese - A few basic phrases and can understand a good few words

Welsh - A few basic phrases, its always been my passion to learn it, and I will one day speak it fluently - mark my words ;)

Sign Language - Just signed up for a course that starts in September, I've done some before though!

Yep, show me a language and I'll start to learn it, I learnt some Romanian before going out there last year, just a few words but makes me wanna do more, perhaps when I've finished with the above LOL.

Tschuss,
Gaspode

<font color=navy>Fluent in English :)

Pretty fluent in Spanish - speak/read/write

Know a smattering of German

a few words in Tagalog & fewer in Japanese

Can spell the alphabet w/my hand & used to be able to hold a pretty fast conversation spelling out words in my youth

I have some distant relatives that speak tagalog fluently. It seems really hard.

I love trying to learn different languages too. Is welsh based on our alphabet?

Do most of you learn by audiotape, or take formal language classes? I sometimes wear the headphones and listen to the tapes while jogging.:D

English, and very limited Swedish (Svensk).

I chose to take a year of Swedish in college. It hasn't turned to be a very practical choice, but I enjoyed learning the language!

I can understand Tagalog perfectly. I am not great at speaking it..but I am really trying to learn!

My ex-father-in-law speaks Tagalog. My exh used to know how to speak it, but forgot everything. I was hoping one of them would teach it to dd.

I forgot to mention that I know limited Italian. Very limited.

My grandmother speaks to me in Italian and I answer her in English. And I have a basic understanding of Spanish, enough to get by -- I took it in high school but I really learned it when I worked for Club Med in Mexico.

French speak read and write
American Sign Language sign close to fluently

TH, did you learn those when you were young from family or in school, if I may ask. I've seen you post about the languages before and have always been curious.

I'm fluent in both French and English (my native language) and I know a bit of German

English.

Chinese -- Shanghai dialect. Only spoken version; can't read characters at all. Actually learned to speak that before English, and my mom still speaks to be in Chinese (and when I don't want DH or kids to know what I am saying, I'll answer her in Chinese as well!!).

2 years' worth of French.

English obviously. I can get by speaking French and Spanish when on holiday but am no where near fluent. My Spanish is better than my French though!
