We have not been down to Orlando since April, so Im not up to speed on this issue. I rented a car for our trip in December and the rental company is notifying customers of cashless toll booths that are going into effect.

1) Are these cashless tolls already in effect?

2) What does this mean for out of town drivers who dont have the necessary equipment?

3) What are the best options for those of us renting a car? Other than stay off the toll road.

Thanks for your input

As long as you're staying in the immediate Orlando area, you'll be fine. I just drove from Sanford to WDW and back again last month. There were no 'all electronic' toll booths along the way. Yes, there are some in other areas of Florida, but not in the Orlando area.
The car rental companies seem to be crying wolf on this one in order to get their customers to pay for EZPass type units.

They are not in effect for central Fl.

I was just thinking about asking this same question. We're in Orlando but also traveling to St Petersburg and Jacksonville. Are they any cashless toll roads we need to avoid. Thanks.

No. No tolls at all on I-4 and I-275 between Orlando and St. Pete. And no tolls on I-4 and I-95 between Orlando and Jacksonville.

The move to all cashless tolls starts in the Miami area and will eventually move up the state.

There is one cashless toll road in the Tampa area (TOLL 618) that runs east-west and runs generally parallel to I-4 but further south. Tourists are not likely to stumble upon it. There are no plans for any Orlando-area toll roads to go cashless anytime soon.

At this time there are no cashless tolls, but be advised, there are unmanned tolls, exact change only in many locations in Central Florida. All of the on ramps / off ramps are unmanned at night with the exception of the start and end of 417 and 429.
