My new home has a sun room. I am not sure how many hours a day of full sun it gets, but I am guessing 6 - 8 hours. I'm going to try and really grow herbs, and peppers indoors because we have so many deer here.

Which herbs grow really well indoors? And, which, if any, will be able to be grown indoors in the winter? I would like to grow my own laurel ( bay leaf ) tree indoors if I can.

I've never tried laurel but I successfully grow several different basils, thyme, rosemary lemon grass flat leaf parsley and oregano indoors in the winter in a series of tiny greenhouses.

Depending on how energy efficient the windows are or are not in the sunroom you may have to add a heat lamp or milk house heater to your garden area in the wintertime.

Even if your sunroom isn't sufficient to grow the herbs, you could buy a small (tabletop sized) greenhouse and lamp and grow them just the same.

I've had success indoors with Basil, Chives, rosemary.

I've grown Thyme and sage outside only so I don't know if they do well indoors. Thyme is pretty hardy suprisingly so I guess it would work.

Does your new house have a deck? I move my herbs out in planters onto the deck - the deer don't come up there. (and we have a TON of deer- last night there was a family of 8 deer in our yard asleep)

Sadly, no deck..... just a big patio. That's the one thing I will miss about our old house. We had an amazing deck.

I have rosemary, basil and parsley growing in my kitchen window.

What herbs are best to choose? There are plenty of herbs that do well indoors. Most of your favorite culinary herbs, including parsley, rosemary, thyme, tarragon, sweet marjoram, chives, chervil and mint will do well. Basil too will happily live indoors, providing it gets plenty of light. They all need at least 5 hours and it sounds like you have that much. Lucky you! Buy your herbs as healthy young seedlings from a nursery.

Indoor herb garden kits are also available on the Web, and include not only free information, but also come with an assortment of the finest categories of herbs.
